Port Antonio, on Jamaica’s North Coast grew as a result of the island’s banana trade. Today, it remains a busy Jamaican port, but has an added touch of glamour after being featured in several Hollywood movies and becoming a holiday favourite with many A-listers in the Caribbean.

Things to do in Port Antonio, Jamaica

There are a whole heap of activities available in the Port Antonio area, enough to keep any family occupied for at least a week. Some of the highlights include bamboo rafting in the Rio Grande Valley, horseback riding or hiking in the Blue Mountains, and hunting for birds and butterflies around the stunningly beautiful Reich Falls.

Those journeying into the Blue Mountains can also visit the Jablum Coffee Plantation, home of the famous Blue Mountain coffee, and learn about the history of the product from colonial times to the present day as well as sample the different brews.

Water sports are of course also plentiful in the area, with Scuba diving, snorkelling, swimming, surfing and deep sea fishing all on offer and easily accessed from any Port Antonio self-catering accommodation.

Visitors can take a hike or one of the many available day tours to the Blue Lagoon, one of Jamaica’s most photographed spots. The beautiful blue-green colour of the lagoon comes from the depth of the water, and makes this place popular with couples wishing to tie the knot.

There are also plenty of opportunities in the area for visitors to learn more about Jamaica’s heritage. Port Antonio regularly hosts arts and crafts fairs as well as exhibits and workshops on many cultural aspects of Jamaican life.

Many come to the island to relax, and there are of course several stunning beaches at which to kick back and enjoy a book around the Port Antonio area including Winnie Beach and Boston Beach.

Places to visit on holiday in Port Antonio, Jamaica

Visitors to Port Antonio can take a day-trip to Kingston, the capital of Jamaica, which is 100km south, on the other side of the island. Here there is also plenty to see and do, including the Bob Marley Museum and the National Gallery. Visitors can also take a peek inside a preserved Colonial house at Devon House and enjoy the peace and tranquillity offered inside the Hope Botanical Gardens.

Ocho Rios is also well worth investigation for any families or beach lovers staying in Port Antonio accommodation.

Weather in Port Antonio, Jamaica

Jamaica’s tropical climate makes it an ideal year-round destination for sun-seekers, although January to April are the months with the driest weather. Temperatures across the year sit comfortably between 20C and 30C, providing perfect weather for the many outdoor attractions on the doorstep of any Port Antonio villa.

Flights to Port Antonio, Jamaica

Port Antonio is served by Norman Manley International Airport (KIN), which receives flights from international airlines daily, including Virgin Atlantic, who fly non-stop from London Gatwick. The airport is 43km across the island, just outside of Kingston. Car hire is available from the airport to reach your self-catering accommodation and is recommended for further exploring the island during your trip.
