Tivoli's elevated position means that from various points around the village far-reaching and stunning views can be had out over the Roman Campagna – the low-lying area that surrounds the city of Rome. The villa is a top example of Renaissance architecture and surrounded by some glorious gardens – ideal for a stroll in a hot summers afternoon. Equally as impressive is the Roman archaeological complex known as Hadrian's Villa, which contains a number of sculptures and other works of art. A further structure in Tivoli is the Castle of Rocca Pia, which was built by Pope Pius II in 1461 as a symbol of papal power.
