Sirmione is a delightful town on the southwest shore of Lake Garda in northeast Italy. It sits on a two mile peninsula which juts out into the lake itself and the still waters reflect its pretty image. Fondly known as the "Jewel of the Lake", Sirmione has rambling narrow streets crammed with tiny shops and cafés. Stroll the waterfront and dine out in the many trattorias and pizzerias in the town. Sirmione, with its impressive fortress guarding the entrance to the town, has many ferries which frequently run up and down Lake Garda. Desenzano also offers many tours of the lake from the small fishing port dock.Shopping
Desenzano is the best place for local shopping with its new shopping centre in an ultra-modern design building. Shop here for food, clothing and souvenir gifts. More authentic shopping for local olive oil, wine and vinegar can be found in Lazise. Take back some lemonscented oil to dress a tomato salad, or try the walnut oil, truffle oil and other herbal flavourings. Lazise has an open-air market usually on Wednesdays where you can buy wonderful local cheeses such as parmesano, pecorino and padano. Clothing and jewellery can also be browsed on the local stalls.
This fairytale castle in Sirmione is surrounded by the blue waters of Lake Garda and can only be reached by an old drawbridge. The castle was built in the 13th century for the powerful princes of the della Scala family. Visitors can enjoy fine views across the lake in all directions from the tower and ramparts.Gardaland
For a really thrilling day out, try some of the rides at the Gardaland theme ark, just outside Castelnuova del Garda. If loop-the-loops and scary rides are your thing, there is plenty of fun to be found here. This amusement park offers some great family shows with performing dolphins and seals. There is also a 3D theater providing an IMEX experience, complete with special glasses.Verona
The graceful city of Verona is a treasure trove of historic buildings including the roman amphitheatre just outside the city walls. There are several other roman relics around the Piazza delle Erbe, which was the original Roman forum and marketplace. It is just 40km east of your Sirmione holiday home and the journey is a scenic drive.
Lake Garda is the perfect place to enjoy some summer sunshine. It has beautiful weather from spring through autumn with plenty of sun and around two inches of rain per month. Temperatures in July reach 29°C (85°F) and higher whilst in winter temperatures drop below freezing at night.
The nearest airport to your Sirmione holiday villa is the Verona/Brescia (VRN) Airport which is approximately 40 km away. Alternatively the Linate Airport (LIN) in Milan is 130 km away and has many regular flights from the UK and Europe.
