On HomeAway.co.uk we can help you pick the self-catering accommodation in San Donato to match your holiday needs. Holiday homes and apartments in this part of Tuscany are neatly located between two of Italy’s most famous tourist destinations – Pisa and Florence – and the coast isn’t far away either. The landscape is special too, with rolling fields, cypress trees and all the other hallmarks of rural Tuscany. Quite often, San Donato apartments are converted from large and historic stone farmhouses or villas, surrounded by agricultural land. To round things off you can select the guest facilities you’d like for your accommodation – many San Donato holiday homes have a pool and internet access.
We have the perfect holiday rental to match your needs:
-Local history. The town of Fucecchio is just up-river from San Donato and here you’ll find the Abbey of San Salvatore, which is from the turn of the 11th Century and has paintings by renaissance artist Giorgio Vasari. A bit further afield is the town of Vinci, famous for Leonardo, the renaissance Polymath who was born close by.
-Cuisine. One of the most famous Tuscan dishes is ribollita, a vegetable soup with bread. Pici is also popular – it’s a type of thick spaghetti normally served with a meat sauce. There’s also a range of local cheeses and cured meats. And just to the south of San Donato is the world-famous Chianti wine region.
-Coast. The Tyrrhenian Sea is within reasonable driving distance. Livorno is one of Italy’s main ports and is the embarkation point for cruises to see the Tuscan Archipelago. Up and down the coast here you’ll also find beaches – one of the best is at Viareggio, which is a big sweep of sand with all the facilities you could need.
-Florence. In San Donato you’ll be so close to Florence that there could be no reason not to visit. It’s Italy’s best destination for renaissance art and architecture. One of the top art museums on the planet is set here – the Galleria degli Uffizi has collections ranging from antiquity up to the renaissance.
-Pisa. You don’t need to be clued up on Italian history to know that one of the country’s iconic historical structures can be found here. But the Leaning Tower of Pisa, though essential, is just of a catalogue of fabulous sights. Just next door to the tower is the Baptistery, which has a remarkable dome, and the spectacular Romanesque Pisa Cathedral.
San Donato gets the pleasant climate that is typical for most of Tuscany. If you’re on holiday at an apartment in San Donato in the summer then the likelihood is that you’ll get warm, dry weather. The hottest conditions are in July, when temperatures get near 30s during the day. Later in the year there’s gradually more rain, and temperatures fall away. Winter days are still usually mild, with highs often hitting the teens here, even in January.
San Donato is at an equal distance from two big airports – Pisa International Airport (PSA) is in the west while Florence is in the east (FLR), and both are around half an hour from the town. The two airports have regular flights to and from cities in the UK with low-cost airlines. The SGC Firenze-Pisa-Liverno road runs close by and links all of the cities along the banks of the Arno River, making it convenient to reach your holiday home in San Donato.
