Olmedo is a relatively small settlement, located roughly 15 kilometres southwest of the larger tourist centre of Sassari, on the stunning Mediterranean island of Sardinia. Although the area is generally quite popular with tourists, and there is a good selection of holiday villas in Olmedo, it has somehow managed to maintain its old-world charm and fantastic Italian hospitality. Although Olmedo may be a small township, its proximity to the coast and larger tourist centres such as Alghero and Sassari mean that there’s always something great to see or do. It is however, beneficial to have a hire car if you plan on exploring further afield from your Olmedo holiday home.
-Going to the beach is a definite must on Sardinia, as the island plays host to a multitude of fantastic beaches such as Lazzaretto beach, Porto Ferro beach and Fertilia beach; all of which are within an 18 kilometre radius of Olmeda. Once at the beach of your choice, you may also enjoy some of the great water sports on offer, including swimming, snorkelling, diving and windsurfing.
-The Capo Caccia National Park located roughly 20 kilometres from holiday homes in Olmeda, is a fantastic area for hiking, biking, bird watching, swimming, diving and general exploring. The main drawcard of the park however, is Neptune’s Cave, a humongous grotto filled with stunning stalactites, which will have you in awe from the moment you enter.
-Wine tasting is a superb way to pass the time on Sardinia, as the island is home to a multitude of great wineries. One such establishment located within walking distance of Olmedo is the Sella and Mosca vineyard, where a variety of mouth-watering red and white wines are available for tasting and purchase. If the wares here are not to your taste however, you need only move on to the next vineyard to continue your Sardinian wine adventure.
-The Museums in Sassari are great if you’re planning a day trip to the area, with establishments such as the Museo della Brigata Sassari (a World War 1 museum); the National Archaeological and Ethnographic Museum; the Museum of Science and Technology; and the Contemporary Art Museum, dotted throughout the township. You may also like to visit some of Sassari’s other great attractions such as the Archaeological site of Monte d'Accoddi or the The Cathedral of St. Nicholas of Bari before returning to your Olmedo holiday apartment.
-The Megalithic Complex of Monte Barantasituated atop the hill of Monte Baranta, is a fantastic historical site. Thought to date back to between 2500 and 2200BC, the location offers access to the ruins of a small settlement, a fortress, a sacred site and a long wall; all of which you can explore at your own volition.
Olmedo experiences a characteristic Mediterranean climate consisting of hot dry summers and cool damp winters. Whilst the summer months are generally the most popular with tourist planning on visiting the region, the mild weather means that a holiday home in Olmedo is basically the perfect year-round holiday destination.
Olmedo is easily reached via a short 20 minute drive from the Alghero International Airport. You may choose to cover the distance between the airport and your accommodation via taxi, shuttle bus, or hire car. Regardless of which of these options you select however, you can expect to be lying by the pool of your holiday home within roughly 25 minutes of arriving on the island.
