The commune of Magomadas is situated around 55km from Oristano, the capital of the Oristano Province. With a population of just 628, Magomadas really is the epitome of a small, Sardinian village, and is surrounded by dense countryside, vineyards, olive groves, roaming mountains and the clear blue of the Mediterranean Sea. With a village centre that sees limited amounts of tourism, Magomadas makes for a truly authentic and rural holiday destination, high up in the hill tops of Sardinia.
Many people head to Magomadas simply to relax. A good way of doing this is to rent a holiday villa or self-catering accommodation on the outskirts of the village, which will perfectly position you to take in the stunning views of this tranquil area. If relaxing on the balcony of your villa and admiring the sunset with a glass of local wine sounds like your ideal break, then Magomadas may well be the ideal holiday destination for you.
The village itself is small and traditional, and has amenities such as shops, a small supermarket, bars and restaurants, which though basic, are more than adequate for a self-catering holiday. Sampling the local Malvasia wine is a must, and there is even a museum dedicated to telling the story of the wine, hidden away in the back streets of the village.
The surrounding countryside provides an excellent opportunity for walking, hiking and exploring, with many vineyards, fruit trees and olive groves to be found that are so typical of Sardinia. Little English is spoken in the area, and exploring the area is the perfect opportunity to learn or brush up on your Italian. There are also several beaches just a few short kilometres away, including the excellent one at Bosa.
A larger selection of amenities can be found in the neighbouring village of Bosa, 9km away. Bosa is a becoming an increasingly popular holiday destination due to its award-winning beach and historical centre, and has more than enough to fill a day trip during your stay. Further afield, the province capital of Oristano (55km) has a number of historical sites, including 11th and 12th Century churches, and many more tourist attractions.
Sardinia is renowned for its excellent weather, particularly during summer months when the mercury can rise as high as 35C. In fact a visit to Magomadas during any month from April to October will likely be rewarded with at least pleasant temperatures, which are ideal for both relaxing and walking and hiking around the surrounding countryside.
