Holidaymakers looking to get away to a hot climate in a peaceful but beautiful part of Italy will find Giuncugnano is the ideal retreat. This is a very small but scenic place that lies within the province of Lucca in the wine producing region of Tuscany. Here visitors will find numerous different places to stay including self catering accommodation, villas, farmhouses, and campsites.
Giuncugnano is a great place for walking and horse riding with various paths available for trekking. There are also plenty of routes in and around the town for cyclists and mountain bikers to take a scenic ride. Pontecosi Lake, Valgli Lake and Lake Gramolazzo are not only very pretty areas in the region but very popular places for kayaking.
There are several excellent golf courses in Tuscany including 18-hole courses at Versilia Golf Club near Pietrasanta and Cosmopolitan golf near Pisa. Tuscany is a famous wine producing region and visitors may like to go on a wine tasting tour in Chianti.
There are few places to eat actually in the town but visitors will find a choice of restaurants, bars and cafes in the area serving good Italian food. There are a few shops in the area and visitors will be able to buy some arts and crafts as well as food from the delicatessen. Self catering holidaymakers can also purchase homemade products at local farms.
There are a number of interesting places to visit here including historic building and churches such as Saint Andrew Apostle Church and the Sanctuary of the Argegna. Approximately 50 minutes drive away is Appennino Tosco-Emiliano National Park, an area of natural beauty with lakes and a backdrop of mountains.
Lucca is also well worth visiting with its magnificent cathedral, tiny Romanesque churches, cobbled narrow streets, towers and lovely mediaeval buildings. Pisa is about 115 kilometres away via the A12 and is a fantastic city to visit, featuring the world famous Leaning Tower. Florence is another wonderful city and can also be reached via the A11 road and is approximately a two hour and a half hour journey from Giuncugnano.
During the daytime in summer the temperatures can get very hot in Tuscany. The warmest time of the year to visit Giuncugnano is generally July and August when the average high temperature is approximately 30 degrees centigrade, while June and September hit a respectable 27 degrees centigrade as well. The average rainfall for one year is below 90mm with October often the wettest month.
The nearest airport to Giuncugnano is Galileo Galilei Airport in Pisa, which is approximately one hour and 50 minutes away. It offers flights to and from domestic and major European destinations such as Paris, London, Madrid, Munich and Amsterdam. Ryanair has the largest number of flights and destinations.
Car hire firms such as Avis, Europcar, Hertz, Maggiore/National, Sixt and Thrifty are all represented at the airport, with desks in the Arrivals area. Europcar and Sixt also offer chauffeur-driven cars.
