Nestled on the side of a hill overlooking Lake Como, and just across the border from Switzerland, Carate Urio offers a beautiful destination for families and couples to escape the city. Whether on a summer beachside holiday or a mid-winter break there is always plenty to do in the area, and a Carate Urio villa offers a relaxed and tranquil second home from which visitors are free to explore and get an authentic taste of Italian life.
Being on the shores of the lake, holiday homes in Carate Urio are ideally located for all the water sports on offer in the area, including surfing, sailing, kite surfing and swimming. For those who prefer to keep their feet on dry land, walking and hiking in the mountains offer some spectacular views over the lake and a great photo opportunity.
Those looking for something a little more relaxing can bask in the sun on one of the many beaches around the lake, although these can be a little packed in summer.
Visitors should spend at least a day exploring the cultural heritage of the area, including the remains of the town’s castle, the Church of Saints Quirico e Giulitta and the Church of Santa Maria.
Of course no visit to the area would be complete without sampling the local fare, and there are authentic restaurants and cafes in the town serving up pasta, pizza, fresh seafood and some of the best local wines in Italy.
Como, the town after which the Lake is named, is easily accessible from Carate Urio, just 12km down the lake’s edge. Como is the largest of the lakeside towns and offers plenty to amuse the visitor, with some of its most impressive sights including its Gothic cathedral and the art gallery. The funicular railway which runs to the top of the hill also presents a great photo opportunity with some fantastic panoramas of the lake and surrounding valley possible on a clear day.
Carate Urio is also only 40km from Milan, Italy’s second largest city and world renowned as a centre of fashion. Once you’ve flexed your credit cards in the city’s delightful boutiques, take your pick from the city’s hundreds of cafes, kick back with an espresso and soak in the atmosphere. A stroll around the city will take visitors past such fantastic buildings as the Piazza Duomo and Milan Cathedral.
Carate Urio enjoys warm, sunny summers, with temperatures reaching up to 25C during the daytime. Winters are much cooler, sometimes dipping below freezing, but offer a chance for visitors to escape the summer crowds and the clear days provide for some great photographs across the lake.
Carate Urio self-catering accommodation can be easily reached via Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP), 69km southwest of the town. Hire cars are available from the airport, as are shuttle transfers, although Carate Urio is also served by public transport.
