The small town of Aci Trezza is on the east side of Sicily on what is known as the Cyclops coast. The name comes from the basalt rocks, known as Faraglioni, which loom 70 metres high out of the sea. Legend has it that they were the rocks which Cyclops threw at Odysseus in the Odyssey. Aci Trezza has a long maritime history and is now a lively holiday town running down the hillside to the Ionian coast, 7 miles (13km) north of Catania. In the distance, Mount Etna looms, surrounded by the national park.

Aci Trezza is popular with visitors exploring the area on foot or by bicycle. There are many quiet tracks and some beautiful scenery in the area. The most popular regions for hill walking are the Madonie and Nebrodi Mountains and the Mount Etna Regional Park has many trails.
Catania was largely rebuilt after the 1693 earthquake but two Roman amphitheaters survived intact and can still be toured. Ursina Castle with its museum is also worth a visit and the cathedral with its royal tombs are both popular attractions in Catania.Messina
Messina is a 75 minute drive from your holiday rental in Aci Trezza and has a wealth of historical attractions. See the the world's largest astronomical clock in the 197-foot bell tower and spend time appreciating the Cathedral in the Piazza del Duomo. Make a wish at the baroque-style fountain or visit the regional museum with its collection of paintings by Caravaggio.
Mount Etna is Europe's greatest natural wonder and is Sicily's highest mountain, standing 3350 metres (10,990 feet) above sea level. Etna is an active volcano and in the recent past lava flows have reached the coast. The slopes of the surrounding national park are covered with trees and shrubs and are ideal for summer hiking, especially as it is cooler than the coastal towns due to its elevation.
The weather around Aci Trezza is pleasant all year round, making it a popular winter holiday destination, as well as a summer resort. Winter temperatures average 15°C (59°F) during the day and 30°C (86°F) during the long dry summer months.
