Drenthe is the cycling capital of the Netherlands. It is in the northeast of the country and is the most scenic and least populated area of the Netherlands. The area is criss-crossed with a network of cycle paths and the quiet country roads making it perfect for cycling, especially as the region is quite flat. Old farms and villages stand as they have for centuries, and the forests and heath provide delightful scenery for exploring. Drenthe is best known for cycling and there are many places where you can hire a bicycle for an hour, or for the whole week. It is also ideal for walking and hiking or for taking scenic driving tours. Horseback riding is also popular through the forests and old bridle paths. The countryside offers a host of sights including the old “hunebedden” which are grave markers. The area lends itself perfectly to bird spotting and nature watching, particularly in the marshes of the wildlife sanctuary De Weerribben. Go punting (a boat like a gondola) on the waterways around Giethoorn .
Cycle to Havelte past the Saxon farms and ride along the Havelterberg to the two dolmen - huge stones stacked on top of each other as grave markers. Also, in the Koelingsveld between Vledder and Doldersum, look for the burial mounds dating from 1000 to 500 years BC. Visit the Smilde forests near Diever and explore some of the scenic villages around Lhee. Orvelte offers a fascinating look at the history of Drenthe as the whole village is a living museum. The Dairy Factory is a fascinating place to visit. See how organic cheese is made, just as it was when the factory opened in 1899, then try some tasty samples. Hijkerveld is a beautiful wildlife sanctuary in one of the most scenic areas around your Drenthe holiday rental. Groningen should also be visited as it is said to be one of the most beautiful cities in the Netherlands.
Drenthe has moderate temperatures all year round. Winters are fairly mild, around 4°C (39°F) during the day and possibly freezing at night. Summer temperatures reach 22°C (72°F) in July and August. The area has around 5cm (2inches) of rainfall every month which may fall as drizzly showers.
There are several easy ways to reach a holiday home in Drenthe. The nearest airport is Schipol (AMS) Airport in Amsterdam. From there you can pick up regular trains and buses to Giethoorn or hire a car. You can also take the ferry from Harwich to Hook of Holland, then a train and bus to Giethoorn. Alternatively you can drive to the area, enjoying some of the lovely Netherlands scenery on the way.
