Holidaymakers looking for some Caribbean sunshine on one of the smaller quieter islands may like to visit Gosier in Guadeloupe. This is a wonderfully scenic place on the south side of the island of Grand-Terre and has many interesting things to do and see. Here visitors will find numerous different places to stay including self catering accommodation, villas and holiday homes.
Gosier boasts some of the best beaches in the country, where tourists can relax on the sand and enjoy the sunshine. The beautiful clear and warm waters are ideal for swimming, while other watersports available o the island include jet skiing, water skiing, towable hydro tubes, canoeing, kayaking, surfing and snorkelling. Golfers need only travel about 28 kilometres along the coast to the nearest course, which is the International Golf Course at Saint Francois. There are some tennis courts in Gosier too. Fishing is also popular here in the waters around the island with boat trips offered to tourists. Hiking and cycling are other activities here with some very scenic areas to visit, not least along the coast. There are numerous bars, inns and restaurants located in the Gosier area mainly serving a good mix of cuisine such as Creole, French, Italian, Chinese and African. There are a few little markets and stores for self catering holidaymakers to purchase food and drink from. Visitors will find several places in and around Gosier selling gifts and souvenirs such as artwork and local handicrafts.
Gosier has a rich history and therefore offers many interesting places to visit such as Fort Fleur d’Epee, which was built in 1759. There are also some beautiful parks and gardens in the area such as Landscape Park Calvary. The Islet Gosier has a lighthouse and visitors can see various species of wildlife such as two metre long iguanas and pelicans. Tropical fish can be seen at the aquarium, which is the largest in the Caribbean.
The average temperature here varies little throughout the year with a range between 23 and 27 degrees centigrade. However, temperatures can exceed 30 degrees centigrade between June and November. This is also the wettest time of the year with as much as 24cm of rainfall on average in August alone. The rainfall tends to be short and heavy. Temperatures rarely fall below 20 degrees centigrade.
Pointe-à-Pitre International Airport (PTP) on Grand-Terre is about 10 kilometres from Gosier and has flights to and from Antigua, Havana, Miami, Montreal, Paris, Port-au-Prince and Saint Lucia amongst other places. Visitors from Europe can travel to France and get a direct flight from Paris-Orly (ORY). Alternatively there are connecting flights from Miami International Airport (MIA) with Air France. Car rental services are available at Pointe-à-Pitre Airport with Avis, Budget, National/Citer, Euradom, Europcar, Hertz and Thrifty. Taxis are also available outside the terminal building.
