The village of Skala is located in the south of the Ionian island of Cephalonia, around 39 km away from the main town on the island, Argostoli. The modern-day village only dates back to the 1956 and this is because the more historic settlement in this area before was levelled by a devastating earthquake in 1953. The village’s name translates from Greek as meaning ‘stairs’ and this is to do with how the old buildings looked as though they formed stairs on the hillside. Unfortunately, these buildings have now been completely lost. Holidays in Skala are extremely popular and this has led to a great resort having developed with a well-established tourist infrastructure. This means there is a good choice of self catering accommodation available in Skala with many properties boasting their own private swimming pool.
During your holidays in Skala you will be able to take advantage of the 3 km-long beach which can be found in this part of the island. This means there are a number of water-based activities available, including the motorised type. Just one word of caution, however, there is a steep shelf into the sea and this can prove to be a problem for elderly or less-able people, especially when exiting the sea. Other activities to consider include tennis, beach volleyball, coastal walks, inland hiking treks and golf.
The resort of Skala is very self-sufficient for people spending their holidays in the area, and there is nothing better than sitting outside a café, with a cooling beverage and watching the world go by. However, there are some great tourist attractions for you to visit and many of these are located close to the capital of Cephalonia, Argostoli. These include the old fishing village of Fiskardo, Assos Village, Lake Mellisani and a fascinating cave system to explore at Drogarati. The town of Argostoli is well worth spending some time in and the central square is especially popular with its good choice of cafés, shops and restaurants.
Visitors on their holidays in Skala can expect to experience a wonderful Mediterranean climate. This means that is stays mild throughout the whole year. On average, summer temperatures can reach the high-twenties or even low-thirties degrees Celsius. During the winter, daily highs will be close to the low-teens. This part of Ionia receives around 25 inches of rainfall per year.
The closest airport to your self catering accommodation in Skala will be Cephalonia International (EFL) which has a good number of services to and from the United Kingdom. These are operated through the following airlines: Monarch, Easyjet, Thomas Cook Airlines and Thomson Airways. From airports such as Birmingham (BHX), London Gatwick (LGW), Newcastle (NCL), Cardiff (CWL) and Manchester (MAN).
