Things to do
-Beaches. Sifnos features some sublime Blue Flag beaches. Platis Gialos is considered one of the best, lying on the island’s south coast and boasting a long strip of sand next to calm and clear turquoise waters. A slightly quieter, though no less attractive beach can be found at the Bay of Vathi, on Sifnos’ west coast.
-Walking. There are numerous unforgettable walks to enjoy on the island. One of the best can be found at Moni Fyrogion – from here you’ll be able to follow a scenic path through a natural preserve up to the Prophitis Helias Monastery, which stands 700 metres above sea level in a spectacular location.
-Gastronomy. Sifnos’ cuisine is linked to its ancient and famous pottery industry, with many dishes slow-cooked in clay cookware. One such is chickpea soup, which is left on for the whole night before serving, or Mastelo, mutton in wine, cooked in a lidless ceramic container.
-History. At several locations around Sifnos you’ll be able to discover remnants pointing to the island’s ancient history. You can take a walking tour to see what’s left of the millennia-old gold and silver mines, while at Aghios Andreas you can see the remnants of a Mycaenean citadel, which sit atop a hills and command a memorable view of the sea.
-Boating. Hiring a motorboat for a day is a great way to explore the island’s coastline. This way you’ll be able to reach bays and coves that are inaccessible on land, swimming and snorkelling in pristine clear waters. On the east of Sifnos you’ll also get excellent views of the ancient Agios Sostis mines.
