Loutra is a traditional Cretan village surrounded by olive groves, just set back from the north coast of the island. A holiday home in Loutra offers guests calm and serenity, with several unspoilt sandy beaches close by, making it perfect for couples on a summer escape. At the same time, Loutra is close to some of the island’s larger resorts, making a villa in Loutra the perfect base for families in Greece.
There is no better way to appreciate the fantastic Cretan weather than to simply laze on a sun-lounger and soak up the sun. Most Loutra holiday villas have their own private pool, which is ideal for cooling off when the heat gets too much.
If you don’t want to spend your entire holiday by the pool, there are plenty of sandy beaches all within a 5-minute drive of Loutra. Here you can swim or snorkel and some beaches also have water sports on offer such as jetskis. There are also glass-bottom boat trips operating nearby which let you see the local marine life without getting your feet wet.
The area around Loutra is very picturesque, with some great walking trails running close by the village. Visitors may also wish to explore the small village of Loutra itself, a traditional Cretan village with its own small shop and bakery, producing fresh local treats every day.
Only short drive from Loutra are several historical sites, including the Arkadi Monastery, the Arsani Monastery, Melidoni Cave, and several Venetian sites, any of which make for a great half-day trip.
There is also plenty around Loutra catering to families, with a children’s play centre only a short drive away, as well as activities such as go karts, pitch and putt and crazy golf.
Although Loutra itself is a tranquil village, the larger town of Rethymnon is only a 5-minute drive. Here visitors can walk around the old town, dominated by a medieval fortress, and meander around the traditional fishing port. The town has lots of great waterside cafes in which to try traditional Cretan fare, as well as having several bars and clubs for those looking for some night-time fun.
Loutra enjoys a fantastic Mediterranean climate. Summers are long and hot, with temperatures sometimes reaching over 30C and very little rain, perfect for a beach holiday. Winters too stay very mild, with temperatures rarely dipping below 10C and often hitting 18C, even in January, making a Loutra villa the perfect place to escape the cold British climate.
Crete is served by Heraklion Airport (HER), 53km from Loutra. This receives daily flights from the UK including those operated by Thomson, easyJet, Monarch, Jet2 and flythomascook. All the major car hire operators can be found at the airport or there are shuttle buses available to transfer you to your Loutra self-catering accommodation.
