The Greek island of Crete is a popular destination for tourists and Kamilari is a delightful village for holidaymakers to stay at. Kamilari is located in the south of Crete and offers easy access to many interesting activities and sights. Kamilari offers many wonderful views as it is built on three hilltops. Visitors can see the olive groves of the Messara Plain, The Libyan Sea and Mount Ida. Various waterports can be tried along the coastline here such as swimming, windsurfing, waterskiing and paragliding. Holidaymakers can also taking sailing excursions around the island and enjoy fishing trips. About an hour and 45 minutes’ drive away is the island’s only 18-hole golf course located at Hersonissos. Holidaymakers can enjoy few places to dine in and around Kamilari including restaurants and taverns serving mainly local fare. Self catering holidaymakers can purchase food and drink from two small supermarkets in the village. There are other small shops in the area from which to buy gifts and souvenirs.
There are several interesting places to visit in and around Kamilari, where there are some wonderful picturesque houses and streets. The village square and church make this a very charming place full of character. The island has some great natural features such as The Cave of Psychro and The Samaria Gorge. Lake Kournas is a beautiful area surrounded by mountains and is the only lake on Crete. Visitors may like to visit the larger towns of the island for the museums including Chania, where there is a Nautical Museum amongst other things. Heraklion has many other places of interest such as the Historical Museum and Archive. The ruined monastery of Katholiko dates back to the 11th century and is the oldest on Crete.
The warmest time of the year to visit Kamilari is generally July and August when the average high is approximately 29 degrees centigrade. During these months holidaymakers can expect to see an average of 12 to 13 hours of sunshine per day. Whilst January is the month with most prolonged periods of rain at an average of 14 days, May is actually the wettest with an average of 115mm.
Heraklion International Airport (HER)) is approximately 65 kilometres from Kamilari and has flights to and from Athens (ATH) as well as other European cities such as Amsterdam (AMS), Berlin-Tegel (TXL), Brussels (BRU), Geneva (GVA), London-Gatwick (LGW), Madrid (MAD), Moscow-Vnukovo (VKO), Paris-Charles de Gaulle (CDG) and Rome-Fiumicino (FCO) amongst others. Autohellas, Avis, Eurodollar and Travel Star are the car rental firms located at the airport. Taxis are available just outside the passenger terminal.
