Kalamaki is a popular holiday destination on the coast of Southern Crete. It is 67 km from Heraklion and close to the villages of Kamilari, Matala and Phaistos. Kalamaki was founded to take advantage of the long sandy beach at Messara Bay, the longest beach in southern Crete. There are several important archaeological sites in the area at Agia Triada, Phaistos and Gortys. Frangokastello is one of the most well-visited landmarks on the island of Crete and is about 88 km west of your Kalamaki holiday home. It is in a scenic location and is famous for its 13th century castle which is still in remarkably good condition. Every year a festival on May 17 celebrates the local victory over the Turks. A strange phenomenon can be seen at dawn when the ghostly “Drosoulites” figures appear as a mirage for about 10 minutes and draws many curious visitors.
