Kalamaki is a popular holiday destination on the coast of Southern Crete. It is 67 km from Heraklion and close to the villages of Kamilari, Matala and Phaistos. The town was only developed in 1970 so there is no real Crete architecture or history and the surrounding landscape is very dry and arid. However, it has a lovely beach, tavernas and local shops, providing all that tourists may want to enjoy their stay in a Kalamaki holiday rental.
Kalamaki was founded to take advantage of the long sandy beach at Messara Bay, the longest beach in southern Crete. The beach near Kalamaki holiday rentals offer sun beds and umbrella rentals and the sand is ideal for families to sunbathe and play. The crystal clear waters are warm for swimming. Watersports are available at various spots along this long beach and Kalimaki has a harbour where boat trips can be arranged. Being family friendly, Kalamaki does not have a noisy nightlife, unlike neighbouring Matala.
Kalamaki is centrally located on the island making it ideal for day trips and tours to other places of interest. Neighbouring Kamilari is the place to visit to see the architectural style of traditional Cretan villages. There are several important archaeological sites in the area at Agia Triada, Phaistos and Gortys. Frangokastello is one of the most well-visited landmarks on the island of Crete and is about 88 km west of your Kalamaki holiday home. It is in a scenic location and is famous for its 13th century castle which is still in remarkably good condition. Every year a festival on May 17 celebrates the local victory over the Turks. A strange phenomenon can be seen at dawn when the ghostly “Drosoulites” figures appear as a mirage for about 10 minutes and draws many curious visitors.
