Most visitors to Istron spend time on the lovely beaches of the Bay of Mirabello. Altogether Istron has three local beaches which are a mixture of sand and pebbles. The nearby town of Agios Nikolaus is named after the 7th century Church of St Nicholas. As well as having breathtaking views of the town and bay, the church has some remarkably preserved frescoes dating back to the 9th-11th centuries. The town has a quaint fishing harbour which is worth exploring on foot. After dark the area is lit by the “kaiki” fishing boats and the local shops and tavernas. Those with a hire car can drive to the palm-tree lined beach at Vai, the famous palace at Knossos, the caves at Matala and the windmills at Lasithi.
