The sandy beaches are ideal for sunbathing and the warm shallow waters are the perfect place to cool off with a swim. Go snorkeling or scuba diving, hire a boat, or enjoy the many watersports on offer in the area. After dark the village has a small and friendly bar for Greek style music and entertainment. Frangokastello is known for its excellent restaurants which can be found around the old castle. Local specialities to try are the boureki (baked potato and courgettes), tsigariasto (sauteed kid or lamb) and sfakianes pites which are sweet pastries. The nearby white Mountains offer scenic drives, hiking and outdoor pursuits with fabulous sea views.
The historic castle gave Frangokastello its name and was built by the Venetians in 1371 to defend the island from marauding pirates. The famous Battle of Frangokastello took place in 1828 during the War of Independence and the Cretan troops took refuge from the Turks in the castle. This is all remembered in an annual festival on May 17, when a procession of men dressed in black, riding horses and carrying weapons goes from the ruined Church of Agios Charalambos to the castle. As the sun rises there is a strange phenomenon when ghostly “Drosoulites” appear for about 10 minutes. It draws many curious visitors staying in Frangokastello rentals to see this strange mirage which still recurs at dawn on that day.
