Erfi is within easy reach of Rethymnon yet offers a quiet place to retreat to in this tranquil mountain village. It is less than 6km from the coast and the sandy beaches at Sfakaki and Skaleta are 7-8 minutes drive away. They were mostly built by Cretan murari who were Venetian trained master builders. Visit the Ruga Maistra and see the overhanging upper storeys, often faced with wood and latticework. Further south, a one hour drive from your Erfi holiday rental is the historic castle which gave Frangokastello its name. The famous Battle of Frangokastello took place in 1828 during the War of Independence and is remembered in an annual festival on May 17, with a dawn procession. As the sun rises there is a strange phenomenon when ghostly “Drosoulites” appear for about 10 minutes. It draws many curious visitors to see this strange mirage which still recurs at dawn and only on that day.
