This is a popular region of Northern Greece with so much to see and do all year round. This part of Greece has some wonderful beaches suitable for sunbathing or family holidays including ones at Thessaloniki and Kassandra. Holidaymakers will find many water activities such as swimming, water skiing, jet skiing, windsurfing, snorkelling and scuba diving. There are numerous resorts in the region such as Chalikidi, that offer freshwater or sea fishing excursions.
Agnanti and Waterland are theme parks located in Thessaloniki, which are a great fun day out for the family. The region has many good places for hiking with wonderful scenery all around and mountain paths. Visitors can also try rock climbing under the supervision of professional instructors or horse riding.
There are various Greek taverns, bars, cafes and restaurants in each of the towns and cities of Central Macedonia. Many of the eateries serve traditional Greek dishes but visitors will find some fast food and pizza outlets. The best place for shopping is Thessaloniki although gifts and souvenirs can be purchased from many towns in the region.
There are a number of interesting places to visit in the region including churches and historic buildings such as the White Tower in Thessaloniki. Several monasteries dating back to Byzantine times can also be seen at Mount Athos. The archaeological site of Vergina includes a museum housing tombs and other important historical finds.
Central Macedonia has a few beautiful parks and botanical gardens including Balkan Botanical Garden of Kroussia and Geo Park of Sidirokastro. No visit here would be complete without a trip to Mount Olympus, the home of 12 Greek gods.
The temperature in Central Macedonia is as low as 5 to 5 degrees centigrade on average in the winter although this can dip below freezing. The hottest time of the year is July and August when the average air temperature is about 25 to 26 degrees centigrade with up to 10 an hours of sunshine per day during the summer months. Rainfall is rare in the summer and visitors are more likely to encounter showers in spring and autumn.
Central Macedonia is served by Thessaloniki Airport, which is located about 15 kilometres south east of Thessaloniki city centre. Various airlines offer flights to and from Athens as well as some of the Greek islands as well as other major European cities such as Belgrade, Berlin, Budapest, Copenhagen, Frankfurt, London, Milan, Moscow, Paris, Rome, Stockholm, Vienna and Zurich.
A couple of car rental firms operate out of this airport, which are Sixt and EasyCar and there are taxis available 24 hours a day outside the airport terminal. A bus service connects the airport with Thessaloniki city centre and runs at 20 minute intervals throughout the day.
