Located on the southern border of Germany, visitors here will find plenty to do and admire in the region. With so many spectacular views to be enjoyed the Allgaeu region is very popular for hiking, cycling and horse riding. The region also boasts plenty of places for swimming including Lake Constance, which is in the west of Allgaeu. In fact the lakes and rivers here offer opportunities for fishing, canoeing, sailing and rafting.
There is plenty on offer here for sports enthusiasts including tennis and squash. Golfers are spoilt for choice here with 14 courses in Allgaeu including 9-hole and 18-hole options. For the adventure seekers coming to the region there are other ways to view the place such as by hot air balloon or paragliding. The winter offers up the chance to go skiing, either downhill or cross country.
Locally made products can be purchased at the many small shops located in the medieval towns of Allgaeu. In December the towns are transformed into delightful Christmas markets. There are many eateries in the region ranging from restaurants and cafes to inns and bars with mainly local fare, but some places provide other options such as Turkish cuisine.

Allgaeu boasts many fantastic buildings and ruins including churches, monasteries and fortresses. This region has several museums too such as the hat museum, doll museum, Model Railway Museum and the Alpine Museum.
The area features several art galleries and cultural workshops for visitors to enjoy as well as theatres and local musical entertainment. There are many places for children to enjoy too including a couple of zoos and Legoland is situated in Gunzburg.
The warmest time to visit the south of Germany is July when the maximum high temperature is 23 degrees centigrade, although June and August are also warm months. The temperature in December, January and February is cold enough to encourage substantial snowfall. Ironically the higher temperatures encourage the most rainfall in the region with July having an average of eight rainy days per month.
Memmingen Airport in Allgaeu is used by several airlines including Air Berlin, Air Italy, Ryanair, Sky Airlines, TUIfly and Wizz Air Ukraine. The train station is located in the city centre is just four kilometres from the airport. It is an intersection point for the two long distance lines Dortmund-Ulm-Memmingen-Oberstdorf and Munich-Augsburg-Memmingen-Lindau/Bregenz-Zurich.
An alternative is to fly to Munich Airport, which is about a one hour drive to Allgaeu and has flights to and from many destinations across Europe and beyond. Air Berlin and Air Lufthansa service the most destinations. The Bavarian Forest can also be reached by road and rail from Prague, Nuernberg, Linz and Salzburg airports.
