Deep in the Var countryside of Provence, France, Vidauban is an ancient wine-making town, surrounded by pink sandstone outcrops and some of the most rugged and wild countryside in Provence. There is a strong medieval heritage in Vidauban, and as soon as you settle into a Vidauban property, you will feel your whole body beginning to relax!
Walking the streets of Vidauban is an unforgettable experience. Quite aside from the sun drenched countryside which surrounds the village, it is the many beautiful 16th century buildings and monuments that give the town such a picturesque ambiance. St Brigitte’s Chapel stands prominently at the summit of a rocky crag, and the strains of the short walk up to the top are immediately forgotten when you see the stunning views right across the Maures Plain, the vast forests of oak and pine and the stunning Aille Waterfalls. On Sundays, the whole town comes to life as the Sunday market rolls into town. Not only is the market a great place to stock up on local delicacies, it is also a highly social affair, with the pavement cafes and little restaurants which surround the market doing a roaring trade.
There is nothing finer than taking a kayak or canoe down the River Argens from a Vidauban property rental. The river runs right through the village, and during the summer, you can hire boats of all variety, climb to the entry point beside the stadium and plunge down the channel for over 6km, taking in the finest sights of the area from an entirely new and refreshing point of view. Alternatively, for those who would like to stay a little dryer during their stay in accommodation in Vidauban, there are many excellent walking routes to try. The undulating, rugged limestone landscape on which the town stands is inundated with paths, picnic spots and viewpoints, making it ideal walking country. Walks along the Argens Valley, the Maures Range and the woodland of the Parasol Pines area all great places to walk, cycle or ride.
There is also a beautiful lake at Les Salles, which covers the flooded village by the same name. Sailing, windsurfing and a huge range of water sports all thrive on the lake, high above the old slate rooftops of the village.
The world famous luxury beach resort of St Tropez is just 50km from the peace and scenery of a self catering Vidauban holiday rental property. If the draw of the golden sandy beaches, the world class restaurants, multi-million pound yachts and fashion shopping of Europe’s premier beach resort are too much of a temptation, you can be mixing with the rich and rare within an hour of leaving your Vidauban accommodation!
The climate of Provence has made the region one of the most popular destinations for summer holidays.
