Make an apartment in Tiuccia your home away from home
Nestled around a sheltered cove on the Golfe de Sagone, apartments and villas in Tiuccia have all the advantages of proximity to the beach as well as the mountainous Corsican hinterland. This large bay's namesake, the village of Sagone a couple of miles to the north, also offers a range of Homeaway holiday homes. Tiuccia's calm, clear waters make for a pristine anchorage, popular with the yachting community, but the lack of tourism infrastructure in the village means it remains decidedly uncommercial. This is great for visitors hoping for peace and quiet, but for livelier times, Ajaccio is only around 20 miles to the south, with its own selection of HomeAway holiday accommodation.
Most Tiuccia holiday rentals are equipped with full kitchens and a barbecue area, great for dining on the terrace come evening. Some won't offer internet access (perhaps purposefully!), so they're great for getting away from it all, focussing instead on the beach and watersports, or mountain hikes and horse trekking. This doesn't mean guests are cut off from facilities, of course – requisites for a comfortable stay are present, and, if a night on the town is called for, the major port of Ajaccio is only 20 miles to the south.
Things to do
Beaches: While it may lack a commercial infrastructure, what Tiuccia doesn't want for are incredible beaches. The town itself is right on a beauty, and there are at least another dozen within easy reach of Tiuccia accommodation, some only accessible on foot or by boat. For some real seclusion, the Scandola Peninsula offers spectacular beaches bounded by cliffs, and only approachable by sea.
Food and drink: There are a handful of bars and restaurants in Tiuccia; the vibe is very laid back and relaxed. The local wines are definitely something to sample, and Corsica also makes its own coke! If guests are seeking one evening out elsewhere, Ajaccio, 20 miles to the south, has a much more eclectic selection of places to eat and drink, as well as some of the finest dining on the island.
Outdoor pursuits: With the combination of mountains and coastline, Tiuccia is a playground for the active tourist. There are the usual watersport activities on the beach at the small marina, and for more commercial operations, again a trip to Ajaccio is in order.
Shopping: Ajaccio has some of the best shopping on Corsica, largely due to the demands of the international sailing community, for which the port is a very popular destination. For closer food shopping, Tiuccia has a small Spar supermarket, with Sagone, a couple of miles to the north, offering a couple more.
Culture: Corsica is world renowned as the birthplace of Napoleon, and Ajaccio was the town where he was born. This is celebrated with an annual festival every July, and visitors can also experience the Bonaparte family home, one of several museums in the town. Don't miss the August street and circus arts festival!
Weather in Tiuccia
The high temperatures of the Mediterranean countries back from the coast are thankfully never really achieved on the islands, due to the moderating influence of the sea. Summers highs reach around 28°C, winter highs are in the mid-teens, with very rare frosts. Most of the rain falls in the autumn.
Travel to Tiuccia
EasyJet operates directly to the UK from Ajaccio Airport, which is only 22 miles from Tiuccia. Bastia Airport has a larger selection of airlines, but is around 80 miles away. Ajaccio, however, has the bonus of being a ferry port, which opens up flight options into Nice or Marseille.
