Holidaymakers looking for a fun vacation in the countryside might like to try the village of Saint-Barthelemy in north west France. Located in the Morbihan department within the region of Brittany, Saint-Barthelemy has many things for tourists to see and do. Here visitors will find numerous different places to stay including self catering accommodation, B&Bs, gites and apartments.
Saint-Barthelemy and the surrounding areas offer some fantastic scenic views and can be explored by hiking, cycling and horse riding. The river here offers holidaymakers the chance to go trout fishing or try kayaking, whilst the area is also great for bird watching. There are many golf courses in Morbihan including Golf de Rimaison in Bieuzzy-les-Eaux, which is about 10 kilometres away. Visitors here can also play tennis or enjoy mountain biking in the area. The nearest beach is only about 35 kilometres away and is a good place for holidaymakers to relax. The northwest coast also offers various watersports such as wind surfing, water skiing and diving. In and around Saint-Barthelemy there are various bars, cafes and restaurants serving a variety of cuisine but mostly delicious local fare. Some shops can be found here as well and self catering holidaymakers will be able to purchase food and beverages as well as souvenirs.
Holidaymakers staying in Saint-Barthelemy will find many interesting places to visit in the area with many old churches and castles. One such place is Pontivy, which is about 20 minutes away. Here there is the 15th century medieval moated castle and a cathedral. Morhiban boasts many places of interest such as museums and galleries including the Musee de Cire de l’Historial in Sainte Anne D’Auray. A 50 minute drive to Vannes will take visitors to museums and an aquarium, while further north in Brittany at Saint Malo is the Grand Aquarium, which is one of the best in France. Visitors may also like to take a day trip to Paris to see the Eiffel Tower and other attractions, which can take almost five hours by car.
The climate in North West France is a temperate one, although the weather conditions are greatly affected by the Atlantic Ocean. The Brittany area of France receives about 200 days of rainfall annually with November to January the wettest time of year. July and August are the hottest months of the year with average maximum temperatures approximately 21 degrees centigrade.
Rennes –Saint Jacques Airport (RNS) is about an hour and 30 minutes drive from Saint-Barthelemy. Flights arrive here from a handful of French cities as well as Southampton (SOU) with Flybe, who also offer seasonal flights from Birmingham (BHX), Edinburgh (EDI), Exeter (EXT) and Manchester (MAN). Seasonal flights also arrive here from Barcelona courtesy of Brit Air and from Cork and Dublin with Aer Arann. Alamo, Avis, Europcar, Hertz, National/Citer and Sixt are car hire companies represented at the airport.
