Holidaymakers looking for a scenic getaway filled with fun, adventure and culture may like to try the Praz de Lys area of France. It is a beautiful area with lots to do and see within the Rhone-Alps region of Eastern France and is close to the border with Switzerland. Located at the heart of the Mont Blanc mountain range, Praz de Lys is a lovely resort for skiing holidays in the winter and hiking in the summer. There is downhill and cross country skiing as well as ski schools for people of all ages. The mountains and lakes provide great settings for walking, cycling and horse riding. Tourists can try other adventurous activities here too such as mountain biking, climbing, canyoning and paragliding. Golf enthusiasts will find a few courses within 45 minute’s drive of Praz de Lys as well as several tennis courts. The lakes and other waterways in the region provide good freshwater fishing, swimming, canoeing and rafting. In the area visitors will find a number of bars, cafes and offering traditional French fare as well as hot snacks a the ski resorts. Self catering holidaymakers can purchase food and drink from a mini-market in Praz de Lys and there are a few to buy gifts and souvenirs. Taninges is about 14 kilometres away and also has various bars, restaurants and shops.
There are a number of interesting places to visit in and around the Praz de Lys area including old churches and buildings in Taninges. The Museum of Mechanical Music in Les Gets is just 15 minutes away. Chamonix is about an hour away and has some interesting museums to visit as well as being home to Europe’s largest mountain, Mont Blanc. The magnificent city of Geneva is approximately an hour away by car and has many interesting museums, parks and historic buildings and Lake Geneva is a very popular tourist destination.
The warmest time of the year to visit this part of France is generally July and August when the average daily maximum temperature is approximately 22.5 degrees centigrade. January is the coldest month with average highs of 3 degrees centigrade, although the temperature can fall below zero with plenty of snowfall on higher ground during winter. The wettest month tends to be September with an average rainfall of 400mm.
Across the border in Switzerland, Geneva International Airport (GVA) is just over an hour’s drive from the Praz de Lys area. A large number of airlines have flights to Geneva International Airport from various destinations across the world. Easyjet covers the most cities including Amsterdam (AMS), Brussels (BRU), London-Gatwick (LGW), Madrid (MAD), Paris-Orly (ORY), Rome-Fiumicino (FCO) and Stockholm-Arlanda (ARN) as well as many others. Car hire firms such as Alamo, Avis, Budget Europcar, Hertz, National and Sixt are all represented at the airport, with desks in the Arrivals level.
