The department of Nievre, France, is a landlocked region in Burgundy. It is a delightfully peaceful, rural department loved by those who visit, especially for those who enjoy the great outdoors.
The Morvan Mountain Range in the east of the department is often cited as one of the most beautiful regions of France. Walkers flock to holiday rentals in Nievre for this very reason. Across the department, there is extensive walking, through forests, along river valleys, across limestone plateaux and up mountains, attracting those with a love of outdoor activities and the feel of fresh air in your lungs. If you visit the Morvan Mountains or take a Nievre holiday rental there, the small town of Chateau-Chinon is well worth a visit, for both the beautifully maintained fortifications and the Musee du Septennat, which is filled with French presidential memorabilia. Throughout the Nievre countryside are beautifully designed and build buildings which have often played an important part in the department’s history. The Cathedrale Saint-Cyr-et-Sainte-Julitte de Nevers, the Ducal Palace and the Church of Saint Etienne are all well worth visiting from a Nievre gite or villa. Nievre is famous for wine, especially white, and there are plenty of vineyards open for tours and wine tasting holidays. Being a rural department of France, Nievre is also home to a range of gastronomic delicacies, which are washed down perfectly with a glass of Burgundy!
Nevers, Nievre’s capital city, is a magnificently quiet town, largely, and luckily, overlooked by the mass tourist industry. However, there are many places to visit, shops to browse and some excellent restaurants and cafes to frequent. When you arrive in Nevers, a great way to explore is by following the blue plaques around the town, which not only point you in the right direction of Nevers’ most interesting places, but also tells you a little about them.
April until late October in Nievre is the best period to be in the department as the changing colours of the countryside make the department even more picturesque, and climatic conditions are ideal for walking. Temperatures average 26°C in July and August.
