Holidaymakers looking for a fantastic get away with fantastic views should enjoy the hilltop village of Lumio. This is a wonderfully scenic place that lies on the west side of the island of Corsica, which in turn is south of the French mainland. Here visitors will find numerous different places to stay including self catering accommodation, villas, apartments and B&Bs.
Corsica has some delightful beaches ideal for families and couples including at nearby Calvi and a pebbly beach at Lumio. Various watersports can be tried here too with diving, snorkelling, swimming, wind surfing, water skiing and sailing. With so many fantastic views and things to see there are many coastal walks with fantastic views of Calvi from the top of the hill.
Further south there is an 18-hole course regarded as one of the best in Europe and there are a few nine-hole courses on the island as well. For the adventurous holidaymaker there are opportunities to try horse riding, canyoning and climbing. Fishing is also popular here with the waters around the island teeming with fish, while freshwater fishing is also permitted on Corsica’s rivers.
There are a handful of shops and restaurants in Lumio. However, a short trip to Calvi offers more boutiques filled with handmade baskets, jewellery and pottery as well as locally produced honey, olive oil and biscuits. Calvi also has more restaurants, bars and cafes to suit most tastes.
There are a number of churches and ancient buildings in and around Lumio and Calenzana. In Calvi visitors may like to see the 13th century citadel or take a boat trip from the harbour. A train takes passengers from Calvi to L’lle Rousse, where there are more beaches. The area also boasts some wonderful natural features and parks including Scandola National Park and Le Parc de Saleccia. Ferry services take visitors from the southern coastal town of Ajaccio to Marseilles, Nice and Toulon on mainland France as well as Genoa in Italy.
Corsica has a long holiday season with hot sun early in the season, although the sea doesn’t warm up until early June. The sea remains warm enough for comfortable swimming through to mid October. The island is generally dry between May and September, with bursts of heavy rain generally in March and November.
