Cotes d’Armor is Brittany’s rough North coast, with sheer cliffs and small medieval towns. The region is bordered by Ille-et-Vilaine, Morbihan and Finistere. If your ideal spot to relax includes magnificent sailing, beaches, coastal walks, striking granite scenery with slate houses and friendly locals, then a holiday cottage or gite in Cotes d’Armor is going to suit you down to the ground.
Dinan is a spectacular ancient river port. The old ramparts, castle and cobbled streets give the town a great atmosphere, with self catering accommodation and gites huddled close inside the walls. The town must be explored on foot or on the Petit Train which runs through the town. It is not a particularly lively town, and for bars and nightlife, head towards Guincamp, home of the basilica of Notre Dame de Bon Secours.
Perros Guirec has some of the best beaches to be found from a self catering holiday cottage in Brittany. It is situated on the pretty Pink Granite Coast, harbouring many small bay beaches, endless water sports, a casino and a number of health spas.
The music festival at St Brieuc in September is essential for anyone interested in Breton music. St Brieuc is the capitol of the region, and also the cultural centre, meaning that it enjoys many exhibitions and festivals throughout the year.
There is some magnificent walking and cycling to be enjoyed from any Cotes d’Armor holiday cottage. The ‘customs officer’s path’ from Trestraou is a great cliff walk, taking you past the picturesque chapel of Notre Dame de la Clarte.
The rivers, lakes and seas of the Cotes d’Armor offer some magnificent fishing. For details, check the tourist information offices in St Brieuc or most other towns on the Cotes d’Armor.
Brittany has a mild maritime climate, winters are not harsh and summer temperatures do not become stifling in the height of summer. Average temperatures in summer reach an extremely pleasant 25°C, often with a slight sea breeze.
