A popular tourist attraction here is to take a horse or camel ride in the desert amongst the famous pyramids. Probably the most famous sights in Egypt are the pyramids including the Great Pyramid of Khufu, which stands some 137 metres high. Another impressive sight here is the world famous Sphinx. There are some other great pieces of architecture here such as the freestanding concrete Cairo Tower, which stands 187 metres tall, while the Qahira Fatimid Mosque dates back to 972 BC. The city is also brimming with culture and holidaymakers can pay a visit to places such as the Cairo Opera House. Cruises along the River Nile are another popular tourist attraction for visitors to Cairo.
Cairo is has a very hot summer between May and October, and a mild winter from November to April. The hottest months are generally June and July when the average maximum temperature is 34 degrees centigrade. January is the coolest month with an average high of 18 degrees centigrade and a low of 9 degrees. There is very little rain throughout the year with December the wettest with just an average of 6mm.
Cairo International Airport (CAI) is located in the north east part of Cairo and has flights to many international airports with EgyptAir. These include Amsterdam (AMS), Athens (ATH), Beijing-Capital (PEK), Berlin-Schönefeld (SXF), Brussels (BRU), Geneva (GVA), Istanbul-Atatürk (IST), Johannesburg (JNB), Lisbon (LIS), London-Heathrow (LHW), Madrid (MAD), Moscow-Domodedovo (DME), New York (JFK), Paris-Charles de Gaulle (CDG), Rome-Fiumicino (FCO), Tokyo-Narita (NRT), Toronto-Pearson (YYZ) and Vienna (VIE) amongst others. A shuttle bus service and a public bus service operate from the airport to Giza and there are also taxis available. Avis, Budget, Europcar, J Car, Hertz and Thrifty are car rental firms located at the airport.
