Holidaymakers looking to jet off to a place full of beauty and historic interest should try the Giza area of Cairo in Egypt. There is so much for visitors to do and see here making it a great location for a holiday at any time of the year. Visitors will find numerous different places to stay including self catering accommodation, villas and apartments.
A popular tourist attraction in Giza is to take a horse or camel ride in the desert amongst the well known pyramids. For a faster journey around the attractions visitors can take guided dune buggy tours. There are some delightful views to be had in the area which can be enjoyed by hiking or cycling.
Golf fans do not have far to travel as there is an 18-hole course and floodlit driving range overlooking the pyramids. Other sports available here include tennis and fishing or holidaymakers can take to the sky in a hot air balloon. Children can have great fun at Tut Land, which is an amusement park located in Pharonic Village.
Several cafes and restaurants can be found in the area with a variety of dining options ranging from fast food to African and Asian cuisine. Self catering holidaymakers can purchase food and drink from grocery stores and supermarkets. Tourists will also find stores and markets selling arts and crafts as well as other souvenir items.
Probably the most famous sights in Egypt are located on the Giza Plateau. The pyramids are a spectacular sight, especially the Great Pyramid of Khufu, which stands some 137 metres high. Another impressive and no less famous sight here is the Sphinx. Alongside the southern face of the Great Pyramid is the Solar Barque Museum, which showcases an excavated and restored boat. An interesting place to visit just outside Giza is the Babylon Fortress, which has churches built in and on its walls. The Pharonic Village has plenty more history and art and includes a replica of the Tomb of Tutankhamen. Cruises along the River Nile are another popular tourist attraction for visitors to Giza.
Cairo is has a very hot summer between May and October, and a mild winter from November to April. The hottest months are generally June and July when the average maximum temperature is 34 degrees centigrade. January is the coolest month with an average high of 18 degrees centigrade and a low of 9 degrees. There is very little rain throughout the year with December the wettest with just an average of 6mm.
Cairo International Airport (CAI) is located in the north east part of Cairo and has flights to many international airports with EgyptAir. These include Amsterdam (AMS), Athens (ATH), Beijing-Capital (PEK), Berlin-Schönefeld (SXF), Brussels (BRU), Geneva (GVA), Istanbul-Atatürk (IST), Johannesburg (JNB), Lisbon (LIS), London-Heathrow (LHW), Madrid (MAD), Moscow-Domodedovo (DME), New York (JFK), Paris-Charles de Gaulle (CDG), Rome-Fiumicino (FCO), Tokyo-Narita (NRT), Toronto-Pearson (YYZ) and Vienna (VIE) amongst others. A shuttle bus service and a public bus service operate from the airport to Giza and there are also taxis available. Avis, Budget, Europcar, J Car, Hertz and Thrifty are car rental firms located at the airport.
