The small town of Sosua on the northern coast of the Dominican Republic is truly one of the most beautiful places to be seen. The town is a popular tourist getaway yet is not crowded or dirty. There is plenty to see and do here with many visitors renting a luxurious condo in Sosua to enjoy the unspoilt sweeping bay and views of the clear waters of the Atlantic Sea.
The first port of call when on a Sosua holiday has to be the beach. With the warm waters of the Atlantic Ocean on your doorstep, Sosua is the perfect place to indulge in a variety of watersports. The synagogue and museum sit side by side and visitors will be able to see photographs and documents which show how the refugees prospered in the town.
If you can tear yourself away from your beautiful Sosua condo, then it is worth making the 19 kilometres trip to Puerto Plata. This city is one of the busiest in the Dominican Republic and is packed full with wonderful sights and amazing attractions.
A definite must on your itinerary is Fort San Felipe. This 16th century fort is the only colonial structure left in Puerto Plata and was used to deter English and French pirates. Fort San Felipe is surrounded by a moat and has a small museum with historical artefacts within its walls. Also worth a visit is The Amber Museum of Puerto Plata. Housed in a beautiful Victorian mansion the museum has a vast collection of amber samples, most of which have wonderfully preserved remains held within them.
For the Finale in Puerto Plata, it is paramount that visitors take a cable car ride up to the peak of the 2,600 foot Mount Isabel de Torres. Not only does it offer breathtaking views of the city and the surrounding area, the mountain has botanical gardens and a scaled down statue of Christ, similar to the one of Rio de Janeiro.
If you decide to have a Sosua holiday, the weather will not be a disappointment. The area is privy to a tropical climate making it sunny and warm most of the year round. Visitors who rent a Sosua condo can expect to see average daytime temperatures of 30°C, no matter what time of year they arrive. Sosua does experience a wet season which lasts from October to January, however, the rain showers are short and things quickly dry out in the warm temperatures.
