Nicosia is the capital of Cyprus and is one of the oldest cities in the world. It is the only remaining divided city. The Turkish north and the Greek south sectors of Nicosia are divided by the “Green line” which separates the Republic of Northern Cyprus from South Cyprus. The Nicosia region is in the centre of the island, in the Mesaoria Plain, flanked by the Kyrenia Mountains with the iconic “Pentadaktylos” or five-fingered mountain.
Many visitors to the Nicosia region enjoy the local shopping in Nicosia. The churches and historic architecture are also interesting to visit, either independently or as part of an organized guided walking tour. Visit the small workshops where artisans practice their trades. The museums and art galleries have a fine collection of historic exhibits and art works. The most popular sights are the Lefkosia Jewellery Museum, the Museum of Cypriot Coinage and the Municipal Arts Centre. The main Cyprus Museum has a fine collection of treasures dating back to the Neolithic age. Beyond the old city is the newer part of Nicosia with a cosmopolitan centre to rival any European city with a selection of nightclubs, bars and restaurants for evening entertainment. In the surrounding hills, walking, cycling, horseriding and other outdoor pursuits can all be enjoyed by visitors from their holiday home in the Nicosia region.
Exploring the old city of Nicosia from your holiday home in the Nicosia region is a must. The thick ramparts which encircle the city were built by the Venetians in 1570. They stretch for 5km and have three gateways and eleven towers. Strolling through this city is a step back in time with its narrow shady streets and balconied houses. The Selima Mosque, formerly known as the St Sophia Cathedral, is well worth a visit, but first visitors must remove their shoes and wash their feet. Beyond the city the rural side of the Nicosia region is in sharp contrast. The lovely Troodos Mountains offers beautiful scenery, pine, oak and cedar forests, hot springs wild orchids and small villages. The Skali Theatre is a bar and entertainment area built inside caves in Northern Cyprus.
The Nicosia region has hot dry summers, averaging 35°C (95°F) in July and August, and pleasant mild winters of 17-19°C (63-66°F), with some showers between November and April.
Cyprus’s main international airport is Larnaca (LCA) which is 50km (31 miles) from Nicosia. Ercan Airport (ECN) in North Cyprus is also very convenient, especially for those staying at holiday rentals in the Nicosia region on the north side of the border. However flights to Ercan have to touch down first on the Turkish mainland as only Turkey officially recognizes the Republic of North Cyprus.
