Things to do
-Beaches. Near Dugi Rat there’s a five-kilometre stretch of pristine sandy beaches. They’re perfect for families with younger children and inexperienced swimmers because the sea is so shallow and clear. The backdrop is also attractive, with the Dalmatian mountains rising in the distance, while fringing the beaches is rich vegetation, with pine forest and olive groves.
-Outdoor recreation. If a bit of adventure is your thing then there are all kinds of options for exciting activities close by – close to Omis are almost 50 different climbing courses, making it a real up-and-coming destination for the sport. Thrilling white-water rafting is also available along the Cetina River between Blato and Zadvarje.
-Diving. As with much of the Dalmatian Coast, Dugi Rat is a fantastic destination for budding divers. This is down to both the calmness and clarity of the waters, as well as the abundance of interesting things to see below the surface – there are ancient remnants, shipwrecks, underwater caves and a wealth of wildlife.
-Omis. This beautiful town is minutes away and has a breathtaking location, overlooked by sheer cliffs. For long periods the town was under the control of pirates, and the stone fortresses that still protect Omis are testament to its turbulent past. Keep an eye out for the numerous historic churches in Omis - some are more than a thousand years old.
-Split. This city is also a short drive along the coast and is famous for its impressive Roman history. Diocletian’s Palace is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and believed to be among the best examples of Roman-era architecture in the world. St Duje’s Cathedral is another essential sight – dating to the 4th Century it’s the oldest cathedral in the world.
