Playa de la Arena is a peaceful town located on the western side of the island of Tenerife. It is an ideal place to have a holiday rental apartment due to the fact that it is much quieter than other areas, adding a sense of peace and tranquillity to your holiday. The town has a lot to offer in the way of activities and is within easy reach of other attractions on the western side of the island.
The central focus of Playa de la Arena is its beach. The town has one of the most attractive coves on the island and has been awarded a Blue Flag. The sand is still natural (made of black volcanic rock) and is a beautiful wonder to behold. There are many activities to be enjoyed on the beach of Playa de la Arena besides sunbathing and relaxing. Visitors can indulge in some watersports such as windsurfing, jet skiing, fishing, swimming and scuba diving. Other activities available in Playa de la Arena include cycling, walking and tennis.
Garachico is a picturesque village situated to the north of Playa de la Arena, approximately 40 minutes drive away. The village was the victim of a violent lava flow from the volcanoes on the island in 1706. This created lava rock pools which are one of the main attractions of the village. Garachico is also home to the Church of Santa Ana and the former Convent of San Francisco. The church had to be rebuilt after the damage caused during the volcanic eruption. The convent is a beautiful example of Canarian architecture with stunning wooden balconies. The convent also houses a small museum. Visitors can also visit the Museo Capinteria Antiga, a little artisan museum situated at the seafront of the village.
Probably the main reason that visitors flock to Garachico is to see the Castillo de San Miguel. This 16th century structure was built to guard against invading pirates and now houses a fabulous rock and fossil collection.
