Holidaymakers looking for a lovely getaway in the sun may like to try Antigua on the island of Fuerteventura. It is a village towards the middle of the island, which is one of the Canary Islands located a few miles off the southern coast of mainland Spain. Here visitors will find numerous different places to stay including self catering accommodation, villas and apartments.
Holidaymakers staying in Antigua will be able to drive to some lovely beaches and enjoy the sunshine. The sea is fine to swim in but visitors should be wary of the water conditions as it can be quite windy here. As such this makes it a great destination for watersports such as wind surfing as well as sailing, diving and fishing. There is an 18-hole golf course on the island at the popular resort of Caleta de Fuste, which is located on the east coast. There are a few bars and restaurants serving excellent Spanish cuisine in the area. Self catering holidaymakers will be able to purchase food and drink from the local supermarkets. There are also a handful of shops selling crafts, gifts and souvenirs.
Antigua is one of the oldest villages on the island and has some delightful buildings and scenery for holidaymakers to enjoy. The church built in 1785 is very picturesque and is open to the public most mornings. The restored windmill in Antigua is a museum and is well worth a visit. Elsewhere on the island visitors can take a trip to the top of Mount Tindaya, which offers views across to the nearby island of Tenerife. Other places of interest on the island include the Animal Experience, which is part of the Baku Theme Park and features an aquarium. Also holidaymakers can take a camel ride across the lunar landscape of Volcano Calderon Hondo. Regular ferry crossings are available taking tourists to the neighbouring island of Lanzarote.
The temperature during mid summer in Fuerteventura can get quite hot although this is tempered slightly by the wind from the Atlantic. The warmest time of the year to visit Antigua is generally July and August when the average daily maximum temperature is approximately 32 degrees centigrade. However the temperature remains reasonably warm throughout the year during daylight hours. June to August sees very little rainfall with December the wettest with a monthly average of 39mm.
