Rio de Janeiro is not just the South American city so well-known for its Carnival, it is also a beautiful state on the central eastern coast of this huge country. From a Rio de Janeiro holiday rental visitors can enjoy some of the world’s best beaches, or explore the mountains further inland with colourful tropical plants, exotic birds and impressive waterfalls.
Rio de Janeiro has some of the world’s best beaches. The Costa del Sol has beautiful whiter-than-white sands and deep blue waters which are ideal for sunbathing, swimming and watersports. For surfing, try the Saquarema Beach with its steady breakers. For nightlife, the coastal town of Buzios has 330 days of sunshine and almost as many nightspots. For hiking, the offshore traffic-free island of Ilha Grande offers 100km of trails which lead to some of Rio’s loveliest beaches. The mountains offer the chance for swimming in mountain rivers and sliding down waterfalls, rappelling down the rocks of the Pico das Agulhas Negras and enjoying spectacular mountain scenery. As part of your holiday in Brazil, sample the cachaca alcohol made from local sugarcane, and dine on fresh fish or tasty alpine goat cheese.
Known as the Cicade Maravilhosa or Marvellous City, Rio de Janeiro offers some fantastic sights for visitors to enjoy. Along with many old churches, museums and parks, visits to the Christ the Redeemer statue and Sugarloaf Mountain are a must. Further afield, the imperial city of Petropolis is worth visiting from your Rio de Janeiro holiday rental, or go climbing in the Parque Nacional da Serra dos Orgaos. Further west, on Rio’s Costa Verde, the colonial town of Paraty is a true gem, surrounded by green forests, waterfalls and flowering trees. The island retreat of Ilha Grande has an interesting history as a pirate lair, leper colony and more recently a prison. It now offers great hikes and tropical beaches in unspoilt natural surroundings. The tiny traffic-free island town of Vilo do Abraao is incredibly picturesque and offers a few bars.
Being in the southern hemisphere, Rio de Janeiro’s hottest month is January, when temperatures reach 29°C (85°F) or higher. The cooler, drier winter months from June to September reach a very pleasant 24°C (75°F) with nighttime lows around 17°C (63°F).
Getting to your Rio de Janeiro holiday rental is very easy with flights to the area from all over the world. The main airport is the Galeao Antonio Carlos Jobim (GIG) International Airport at Guanabara Bay, about 20km (13 miles) north of the city of Rio de Janeiro. Air-conditioned buses and municipal taxis take tourists into the main areas of the city.
