Holidaymakers looking for somewhere different to travel to in Central Europe should pay a visit to Medjugorje in the south west of Bosnia-Herzegovina. This part of the country is close to the border with Croatia and has many fantastic things to do and see. Many bars, cafes and restaurants are located in the area and along the Adriatic coast. Medjugorje has lots of souvenir shops especially relating to the apparitions of the Virgin Mary seen here in 1981. Holidaymakers will find many fascinating places and sites to visit in and around Medjugorje including St James’ Church. Many visitors come to Apparition Hill in Medjugorje, which was a place where apparitions of the Virgin Mary were seen several years ago. A little further east is the city of Mostar, which has many shrines, churches and mosques including the modern catholic cathedral and the 16th century Karadjoz-bey mosque. Another interesting site in Mostar is the Partizan Memorial, which is dedicated to those who died defending Mostar in the Second World War. Mostar also has some grand houses dating back to the Ottoman Empire such as Muslibegovica House. Holidaymakers could take a day trip to Sarajevo, which is rich in historic architecture and takes many influences from both the east and west. On the Adriatic Coast tourists might like to visit Split in Croatia, which is another interesting city many museums and galleries.

The coldest month is January with average highs of 8 degrees centigrade and lows of 2 degrees, although the temperatures can drop to below freezing.
