Lower Austria is a great holiday destination with many interesting things to see and do. This state is located in the north east of the country and is a fun place for holidaymakers to explore. Here there are theatres and museums such as the Lower Austrian State Museum and Diocese Museum St Polten. There are many castles and wonderful buildings in the region. Klosterneuburg Abbey is a Roman Catholic monastery and one of the oldest abbeys in the country.
A short drive will take visitors to the wonderful city of Vienna, which houses many fantastic historic buildings and museums. These include the Schloss Schönbrunn Palace, The Opera House and the Art History Museum. It is also home to the world famous Spanish Riding School and Vienna Zoo.
The warmest months in this part of Austria are July and August with an average maximum high temperature of 25 degrees centigrade. December and January are usually the coldest months with an average temperature range of between -4 to 1 degree centigrade. Summer time sees quite frequent thunderstorms with June the wettest month with an average 72mm of rain.
Vienna International Airport (VIE) is about 90 kilometres from Sankt Polten, which is the capital of Lower Austria. Vienna has flights to and from other Austrian cities as well as from around the world. Austrian Airlines is the main airline operating out of Vienna and has flights to Amsterdam (AMS), Athens (ATH), Beijing-Capital (PEK), Berlin-Tegel (TXL), Brussels (BRU), Dublin (DUB), London-Heathrow (LHW), Moscow-Domodedovo (DME), New York (JFK), Paris-Charles de Gaulle (CDG), Tokyo-Narita (NRT), Toronto-Pearson (YYZ), Washington-Dulles (IAD) and Zurich (ZRH) amongst other cities. Taxis are available outside the airport and car rental firms such as Avis, Budget, Easy Motion, Europcar, Hertz, Megadrive, Sixt and Union Car are all represented at the airport.
