Holidaymakers looking for a place of outstanding beauty to stay in will love Bregenz Forest in the far western side of Austria. Close to the border with Germany this area has been designated a World Heritage site. Here visitors will find numerous different places to stay including self catering accommodation, villas, chalets, apartments and campsites.
Bregenz Forest is a wonderful location for walking with great scenery all around and 2,000 kilometres of sign posted hiking trails over hills and by streams and lakes. There are also several challenging cycle routes in the valleys and mountains here. At the village of Sibratsgfall there are 40 miles of marked trails for Nordic walking. There are three excellent 18-hole golf courses in the area including the Golf Park Bregenzerwald. The adventurous visitors can try many outdoor pursuits such as paragliding, high wire rides over the White Water Park, cave visits, abseiling and mountain climbing. The streams, lakes and rivers here are also ideal for fishing, especially for brown and rainbow trout. The area boasts several excellent inns and restaurants serving traditional regional cuisine. There are a few markets in the area for self catering holidaymakers to purchase fresh food and cheese is a particular speciality here. There are also shops selling a wide range of gifts and souvenirs.
Bregenz Forest boasts a number of interesting exhibitions and galleries in museums such as EGG Museum, the Women’s Museum Hittisau and the Angelika Kauffmann Museum. Visitors can take a ride on a historic railway called the Walderbahnle with 100 year old steam locomotives. A chairlift take passengers up the mountain, where they can get stunning views all around. One day tours take tourists to the nature reserve where they walk with llamas and continue on to Korbersee. There are also a number of spa areas in the area for holidaymakers to relax and enjoy being pampered for a few hours.
July and August are generally the warmest months in his part of Austria with average high temperatures of about 23 degrees centigrade. In winter the temperature can drop 2 or 3 degrees below zero at night, especially in December and January. However, these two months are also often dry with the risk of rain more likely in July.
Innsbruck Kranebitten Airport (INN) is approximately two hours and ten minutes from Bregenz and has flights to and from Cologne/Bonn, Copenhagen Exeter, Frankfurt, Leeds/Bradford, Southampton, Stuttgart and Vienna amongst other places.
