Located on the Tarragona stretch of the Costa Dorada in the Catalonia region of Spain, L’Ampolla is a great coastal resort which attracts sun-seekers from across the globe. The villages fishing origins still live on strong, but tourism has become important since the end of the 19th century when visitors began flocking to the glorious beaches which line both the Mediterranean and the mouth of the River Ebro.
As a coastal resort, holidays to L’Ampolla, Spain, revolve around the beaches. The resort is blessed with a fantastic range of sand, pebble and secluded cove beaches which stretch all along the Costa Dorada. The sand beaches closest to the town are of course the most popular, especially as the waters which line them are calm and shallow, perfect for children to swim safely.
The Catalan countryside which surrounds L’Ampolla is the ideal place to walk in, admiring the unspoilt and slightly wild countryside. The Olles Lagoon is a delightful place to walk or cycle, especially as it is home to a large range of aquatic bird species. It is so rich in bird life that the lagoon has been incorporated into the Ebro Delta National Park. There are a range of marked trails of varying lengths to choose from.
L’Ampolla has a surprising number of festivals, competitions and displays, especially around the marina. If you are staying in a self catering L’Ampolla villa or holiday rental apartment between May and September then you are more than likely to be there whilst there is some form of excitement around the marina! The Fishing Championship, Ironcat Triathlon, Jet Ski Championships, Beach Volleyball and beach football tournaments all occur between May and July, and there are many cultural festivals too.
One of the closest towns to a holiday rental in L’Ampolla is the delightful town of L’Ametlla de Mar. Whilst L’Ametlla de Mar is famous for its world class beaches, it has managed to avoid swarms of tourists during the summer and has therefore retained much of its Catalonian atmosphere and culture. It is one of the finest scuba diving locations on the Costa Dorada, and there is a strong sailing community living here.
All year round, the charm of the town and the walking and cycling of the Natural Parks draws people into L’Ampolla accommodation, and at these times, temperatures still remain above 10˚C at almost all times. During summer, it is the beaches which provide the main attraction, as temperatures rise into the mid 30’s (˚C) daily.
Reus Airport (REU) is the closest airport to any of the accommodation in L’Ampolla, and there are a number of transfer options from the airport. Taxis are inexpensive, and car hire is available from the airport. Ryanair provide cheap flights to Reus direct from Gatwick (LGW), Stansted (STN), Liverpool (LPL), Glasgow (GLA) and Dublin (DUB).
