Lake Lugano is a glacial lake that is located in both Switzerland and Italy, and in this article we look at the accommodation options and visitor attractions on the Italian side of the water, which primarily lie in the province of Varese. The lake itself is situated between Lake Como and Lake Maggiore, in the famous ‘Seven Lakes’ area in the north of Italy – one of the most delightful spots in the country for outdoor activities.
Attractive towns and villages and historical sites of interest can be found in abundance in this part of Italy, but for many visitors Lake Lugano holidays are all about outdoor pursuits. The lake itself is a prime destination for water skiing, swimming, jet skiing and other energetic water activities, though those seeking a more relaxing break may prefer to opt for a spot of fishing or simply enjoy a peaceful boat tour along the water.
Away from the water the landscape becomes lush and green – ideal for hiking, walking, trekking, mountain climbing and just about every other countryside pursuit imaginable. Lake Lugano rentals can also be used as a base for a golfing holiday, with a number of excellent courses to be enjoyed in almost every direction.
The majority of Lake Lugano is located in Switzerland, but there are still plenty of towns and villages that can be used as Italian bases for visiting the region. Porto Ceresio is a nice spot, 13km from Varese and the home of some excellent restaurants in which to sample the local cuisine. Porto Letizia is another option, lying in the north-east corner of the lake and also close to Lake Como, allowing you to visit two of Italy’s finest lakes during your stay.
There are not too many holiday destinations where you can comfortably visit two countries in one day, but Lake Lugano is one of them! The Lake continues its path north into Switzerland, and leads to some excellent skiing and winter sports options.
Lake Lugano lodging options are extremely popular during summer months, when temperatures reach up to and above 30C and there are several hours of sunshine almost every single day. Spring and autumn are also pleasant times for a visit, especially if you plan days of hiking and exploring, and winter is the time to visit if you want to head out into the skiing region.
Lake Lugano accommodation is within easy reach of Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP), meaning getting to your rental accommodation is not a challenging task. Public transport links are good, but hiring a car will allow you to see far more of this unspoilt region, and will allow you to complete the 65km airport to accommodation transfer in less than an hour.
