Laguna Beach is a popular seaside resort in Orange County, California, and has recently gained international recognition as the topic of an MTV reality show. Renowned for its fantastic beaches and budding artist community, Laguna Beach is the second oldest city in Southern Orange County, and has a huge number of attractions for family members of all ages. Whether you are seeking an active vacation or a relaxing break, Laguna Beach has something to offer.
Many TV shows and movies have been filmed in Laguna Beach, and as the name would suggest, the background for many of them is the beaches. The seven miles of pacific coastline are packed during summer months, with both tourists and locals sunbathing in the excellent weather, and surfing and skim boarding in the warm waters. Scuba diving, snorkelling, diving and fishing are other popular options, and young children love playing in the rock pools that can be found at regular intervals along the long sandy stretch.
There is more to the resort than just golden sands, however, with a number of excellent restaurants, shops and family attractions to be found around the town centre. Laguna Playhouse is a popular tourist spot, and the oldest running playhouse on the West Coast. Productions from an array of local and international artists are held throughout the year in the Playhouse’s intimate environment. At another popular attraction, the Pacific Marine Mammal Centre, visitors can get up close to a variety of marine animals.
Laguna Beach, California is also popular with the artist community, and a number of galleries can be found in the town centre. These include the Laguna Art Museum, which showcases top works by local artists.
There are a huge number of other cities and towns to visit in Orange County during your stay. Newport Beach (13 miles away) is one such spot, and has plenty in the way of surf beaches, top leisure facilities and family attractions. Some of the finest beaches of all can be found in Huntingdon Beach (18 miles), which is rightfully known as ‘Surf City USA’.
Laguna Beach has a Pacific coastal climate, meaning summers are warm and dry but receive cooling sea breezes, so the heat is not stifling. Winter months are mild, with an average temperature of 12C, and most rainfall occurs during this season of the year.
John Wayne Airport (SNA) is the sole commercial airport in Orange County, and just 16 miles from Laguna Beach. Unfortunately direct flights from the UK are hard to find, so the best option is usually to fly to San Diego International Airport (SAN) and either get a connecting flight to Orange County, or make the remaining 74 mile journey over land.
