Lagos, Portugal is perfectly situated to take advantage of some of the Algarve’s finest beaches. Considered by many as the best town on the whole of the Algarve, a holiday villa in Lagos is always at the centre of the regions activity, without being a hectic tourist resort.
The beaches of the Algarve are of course a main reason why Lagos villas are so popular. The main beach of Lagos Town is the beach of Ponta da Piedade, nestled in a rocky cove, where the amazingly transparent Mediterranean waters gently lap. Just a 25 minute walk from the centre of town is Praia de Dona Ana, Praia do Camilo and Meia Praia a few minutes further on. Whatever your preference in beach, from the endless, flat golden sands to the secluded, sheltered cove beach, there is certain to be an ideal spot for you within a short walk of self catering Lagos accommodation.
There are two beautiful golf courses within close proximity of an apartment in Lagos. Palmares and Boavista Golf courses are challenging courses set in a wonderful setting, offering great entertainment for beginners and experts alike.
There are many interesting places to visit within the town, from the beautiful Church of San Antonio which holds the municipal museum, and the Franciscan Monastery.
Deep sea fishing trips, windsurfing, parasailing, scuba diving and boat trips along the coast are all excellent options from the beaches of Lagos or Lagos marina, where tours of the caves and grottos along Ponte de Piedade leave from. Slightly further afield, the beaches of the Atlantic coast to the west offer excellent surfing as the Atlantic rollers hit the beach after an uninterrupted journey from America.
The beach resort of Praia da Luz is a beautiful, old fishing village, whose stunning beach has shifted the importance of fishing to a distant second to tourism. Despite this, Praia da Luz has avoided the high rise development which has altered the atmosphere of much of the coast.
Many of the luxury villas have pools in Lagos as summer temperatures can occasionally hit 40°C during July and August, the hottest months. Even during the winter, temperatures are almost never below 10°C during the day, which keeps the golf courses doing great business all year round.
Lagos and the self catering villas of Lagos are all within an hour of Faro International Airport (FAO), which receives many daily flights from the UK, especially during the summer.
