The tourist capital of the Costa Tropical, Spain, is the area surrounding La Herradura and neighbouring Almunecar. Although the Costa is far less known that its famous neighbour, the Costa del Sol, La Herradura, Spain is no less exciting than any of its Costa del Sol counterparts. Lying in the shadow of the Sierra Nevada, La Herradura is a hugely attractive village on an even more pleasant crescent shaped bay.
With 19km of varied coastline, visitors to La Herradura holiday villas are spoilt for choice when it comes to beaches. With small secluded coves covered in sand, shingle and pebble beaches or large, fine sand beaches where water sports thrive, you are certain to find your little peace of heaven by the sea from La Herradura accommodation. Of the vast number of water sports available, scuba diving is one of the most popular, exploring the underwater world off the coast of La Herradura. When staying in a La Herradura holiday villa, rent windsurfing or sailing equipment or enjoy water skiing and para-sailing.
La Herradura is not only a beach resort. Rural tourism and agro tourism has begun to take off in La Herradura. The rich natural landscape is perfect for horse riding, (the stables in Taramay offer trekking, lessons and excursions), hiking and mountain biking. There are moderate trails or tough mountain trails into the Sierra Nevada for all three sports. Alternatively, you can take to the skies and try parapenting.
Golfing holidays to La Herradura are not the most well catered for, but if you are looking for a round one afternoon, the 18 hole golf course at Granada is an hour away, or there are two spectacular 9 hole courses closer by at Salobrena.
Evenings from a La Herradura holiday villa can be spent in a huge number of ways. There is frequent evening entertainment during the summer, and a range of fiestas which spring up throughout the year. Year round, La Herradura has jazz bars, nightclubs and bars which can become very lively!
Almunecar, the sister resort to La Herradura delights visitors on three fronts. The beaches are a major draw, and have made Almunecar a vibrant holiday destination, and the rich history from the Roman ruins to the mediaeval castle of San Miguel and Almunecar make for fascinating viewing. However, it is the huge Loro Sexi Bird Park which draws the majority of visitors to a self catering La Herradura villa to make the trip around the coast.
Salobrena is a picturesque whitewashed village which sits in the shadow of a dominant Moorish castle. The fine beaches and idyllic traditional lay out have made Salobrena a real tourist favourite, and snorkelling, diving, golf and fishing facilities on offer too.
Summers in La Herradura soar into the mid 30’s (°C) during the summer, with very little rain and mild evenings, perfect for enjoying the restaurants or simple soaking in the scenery from your La Herradura accommodation. Winters are very mild, averaging an amazing 18°C, which means that La Herradura villa rentals are a haven from the British wintertime.
Grenada Airport and Malaga (AGP) Airport are both within an hour of accommodation in La Herradura, and although Grenada is around 10km closer, there are more regular cheap flights to Malaga available, which increases both your travel options and the weight of your purse!
