Located in Summit County, high up in the Colorado Rockies, Keystone is part of the area known as ‘Colorado’s Playground’ due to the huge number of outdoor activities on offer in the area. Keystone is a popular destination in winter, as it is one of the four major ski areas in the county, but also has plenty on offer for the summer tourist. Accommodation in Keystone, Colorado, USA, includes wooden lodges that sit to the spectacular backdrop of Dercum Mountain.
The Keystone Ski Resort is far and away the number one reason that tourists visit the area, and occupies four separate mountains that offer a total of 117 different trails to cater for skiers of all abilities. Three of the mountains are connected by a series of gondolas and ski lifts, making traversing between ski areas surprisingly easy. Equipment sales and hire are handled by a number of ski shops in the resort centre.
There are many activities on offer for both summer and winter visitors. Winter visitors can choose between downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling, dog-sleighing and ice skating. The resort is also the only one in the area to offer night skiing, where runs are light by large light fixtures. Summer tourists also have plenty to choose from, with hiking, biking, climbing, fishing and trail running all popular.
Keystone is split into five distinct areas, each offering different types of appeal for different types of people, and when the sports are done for the day visitors will find that there are a number of cafes, bars and restaurants to choose from, with the resort offering a vibrant night life. There are also a number of top quality spas for those wishing simply to relax and rejuvenate for the next day on the piste.
With so much to see and do around Keystone, only those staying for a prolonged period are likely to look to venture outside of the area for other ideas. Breckenridge, Copper Mountain and the Arapahoe Basin are the other three main ski areas, and a Summit Pass will provide access to all of these.
The mountains can greatly affect the climate in Keystone, but as a general rule the winters are cold with temperatures rarely rising above the zero mark, and the summers are warm and can reach above 20C. In short, the climate is ideal for the activities of the season, and winter visitors can expect plenty of snow.
Keystone is ideally positioned, as it is the closest major resort to Denver International Airport (DEN), which is 70 miles away (112km). Denver is one of the busiest airports in the world, and receives direct flights from London Heathrow through British Airways.
