Once the New Year celebrations are over and you start to feel those glasses of bubbly, why not take a relaxing break to rejuvenate? There's surely no better method of clearing the head than the cold, crisp air of the Alps, and nothing to comfort the soul quite like a wood-burning fire in a cosy North American chalet. At this time of year, prices are low and yet snowfall is excellent, as many skiers sit tight for the school holidays come Easter: all you have to do is choose your dream destination, and enjoy the ski holiday of a lifetime. You'll enjoy uncrowded runs, fewer queues, and the option to sample a more tranquil form of après ski, if you wish!

Below are HomeAway's top five January ski destinations, chosen primarily for high altitude, secure snow and spectacular scenery. But while each of our cottages in the US and each of our lodges in Europe offer proximity to fantastic slopes, they'll also allow you to enjoy a number of special extras. The likes of Andorra in Spain and Kronplatz in Italy offer fine cuisine and historic attractions, whilst Jackson Hole and Aspen proffer the facilities for snowshoeing and sledding. Of course, whatever you fancy doing, and wherever you want to go, treat yourself to the luxury of private accommodation: book accommodation through HomeAway today.

Pas de la Casa, Andorra Pas de la Casa, Andorra

Andorra is an excellent choice for beginners and intermediates, with good ski schools, modern ski lifts, and reliable snowfall in January. It's also the perfect spot for those on a budget (most of us are post-Christmas!) as it boasts some of the cheapest accommodation in Western Europe, but also plenty of duty-free shopping. From designer fashion labels to gastronomic delicacies, it's a great place to pick up cheap wares if you have any Christmas cash to spend. Most of the area's resorts are also linked, so you can take your pick of the slopes and choose somewhere different every day: Pas de la Casa and Ordino are particularly popular.

Plan de Corones, Italy Plan de Corones, Italy

Located in South Tyrol and nestled on the border with Austria, Kronplatz - or Plan de Corones in Italian - is a great spot for ski holidays in January. Deep in the Dolomites, you'll find an eclectic combination of Italian, Austrian and German influence, with a rather confusing range of cuisines and conversations to be had! But don't worry if you only understand one language or the other, as everything is titled in a number of languages. As for the skiing, some of the area's slopes top 2,300 metres, and of the 40 or so located around Kronplatz's pretty villages, there are a range of blue, red and black runs, so everyone's more than catered for.

Jackson Hole, Wyoming Jackson Hole, Wyoming

This beautiful valley in the state of Wyoming is one of the best family ski spots for January. The area's low-lying resorts are surrounded by cloud-topped mountains and tumbling rivers, home to a number of indigenous species like beaver and elk. When it comes to skiing, Jackson Hole offers a huge range of slopes for beginners, intermediates and experts, so you can head for tree-lined trails while the kids learn on wide, groomed runs. And as for other attractions and activities, there are plenty: the area hosts dog sledding races in January, accompanied by fireworks displays and free-to-the-public parties, and sleigh rides are always available.

Aspen, Colorado Aspen, Colorado

Even the name 'Aspen' is synonymous with skiing, and there are plenty of reasons why: the area's picturesque landscapes, dominated by the Colorado Mountains, are awash with the best slopes in the world. There are no less than three different ski areas to choose from, so there's a vast array of runs for all levels of expertise, and the snow is light and dry, particularly in January. The area is also renowned as being one of the most peaceful in the US, yet it's packed with attractions and radiates old-fashioned hospitality: a former silver mining town dating back to the 19th century, Aspen's the place to go for an all-round excellent ski break.
