Courmayeur ski holidays Elegant, stylish and family friendly
HomeAway travel expert
Lying at the foot of Mont Blanc (or Monte Bianco as the Italians call it) and nestled in the Aosta valley, close to the French border, is the Italian village of Courmayeur. It is a characteristically medieval Italian village, its centre made of old cobbled streets with an authentic Italian feel to them. Courmayeur is effortlessly stylish, with a noted cafe and bistro culture and elegant boutiques lining the walkways. You can use the village as a good base to explore the Aosta valley region, or sit back, relax, and enjoy spectacular views of the alps from one of the swimming pools at 1700m and 2050m, soaking up the sun and atmosphere.
Courmayeur has always prided itself on being a family friendly resort. It caters well to children and has a good, family friendly feel. There are excellent children's facilities in the village and on the piste, with a good ski school for complete beginners where capable instructors will watch the kids whilst you take a break to enjoy the piste.
Ski the chic Italian Alps
Courmayeur ski resort
At a height of 1224 meters, Courmayeur is not the highest of Alpine resorts, but it still guarantees snow on most of its 22 runs by covering 80% of them with snow cannons. In total there is around 100km of good skiiable piste to choose from, and the runs break down into 6 beginners, 12 intermediate and 4 advanced slopes. There is of course plenty of off piste area too. The pistes are cut into two areas separated by a large rocky ridge. Carrying to the top are 8 chair lifts, 3 drag lifts and 5 cable cars, as well as the nearby Checrouit gondola, the highest lifts climb to 2763 meters and drop you off for a 20km run (Courmayeur’s longest)

There are 22 major runs close by the village. Climb above the focal point at Plan Chercrouit on the Chercrouit gondola to find wide open pistes and boarding areas. On the back side of the hill you will find beautiful wooded areas too, great for cross country skiing. If you are looking for a bit of a challenge there are also tougher piste routes such as the Toula glacier route. In the afternoons, most will head over to Val Veny to enjoy the sun and the classic routes. Going out past Entreves is La Palud, where the cable car will draw you up to Panta Helbronner, on the shoulder of Mont Blanc.

Other resorts close to Courmayeur
Courmayeur is setup to cater especially to beginner and intermediate skiers, so for advanced skiers a day trip to one of the other nearby areas might be in order. Close by through the Mont Blanc tunnel is Chamonix, which is perfectly suited to intermediate and advanced skiers, with few beginner runs for good measure. This counterpoint benefits both resorts quite well, as you can easily shuttle between the two. You also have the rest of the Aosta valley to explore with cross country skiing.

Apres ski in Courmayeur
After a day on the piste, it's time to get back to the village and try the Apres ski scene. As you would expect from an Alpine resort, there is plenty of lively Apres ski on offer, with a good range of bars, bistros and restaurants to cater to every taste. When you jump off the slopes, head to the cafe for a deliciously thick hot chocolate. A tip: finding the best restaurants involves a bit of a climb as they tend to be higher up the mountain. The evening in a ski resort is always a lively time and Courmayeur has some good cocktail bars such as the American bar, or for a quieter drink relax by the log fire at the Guides bar.
