The eerily beautiful landscape of Madeira, with its volcanic rocks and rugged coastline, is spectacular in May. Explore the charming capital of Funchal and the yachting port of Calheta. Madeira’s waterways - or lavadas - are best explored on foot, though to get the best view of this blissful region, you’d be best chartering a boat and sailing around the coast, stopping to sightsee and swim along the way.

Aegean Coast, Turkey
The Aegean Coast supplies the sort of pleasures that come with every great beach holiday: warm water, sandy beaches, golf and luxury spas. Turkey offers far more than contemporary delights however: steeped in history, the Aegean Coast is bejewelled with ancient monuments stemming from the time of the Grecian and Ottoman empires. Stock up on culture then, when you’re ready to unwind, hit the beach at Gumbet or Bitez, where some of the country’s best bathing spots can be found.

What Corsica may lack in size it more than makes up for in diversity. From sawtooth mountains to verdant forests, the French island is awash with natural beauty and ancient history. Explore the hilltop villages, hike through the hills and swim in secluded bays. Despite having been part of France for over two centuries, Corsica still retains a unique charm, complete with its own customs, language and sedate way of life.
