HomeAway travel expert
In April, you need to head south – and the further the better. The Mediterranean is just that bit nicer than it was in March, but you’re best to venture down to Cyprus, Turkey, and the southern reaches of Italy and Spain. You won’t get scorching temperatures topping 30°C, but let’s face it – who wants to look like a lobster this spring?
The Canaries are, as ever, lovely, and of course long-haul destinations like Thailand, Cape Verde and the Caribbean are stunning – but if you’re just looking for a sunshine break that won’t break the bank, you can find it closer to home. Here we travel further away as we go down our destination list, but there are no long-haul flights to be heard of (*sigh of relief*). So here they are: five of my favourite destinations for April – and I think you'll agree that they're great.
Heating things up: Where to go for sunshine in April
April weather in Sliema, Malta
Head over to Malta’s modern resort of Sliema this April, and you’ll find an average daily temperature of 19°C. That’s comparable to a lovely summer’s day in the UK, but it can reach the mid-20s during a good spell. Admittedly it can be windy, but there’s rarely rain, and nine hours of sunshine a day should satiate your Vitamin D needs. And at just two and a half hours away from London, it’s one of the easiest destinations to get to. Stroll along its stone beaches, and enjoy Maltese cuisine – I hear the Easter Figolla pastries are delish.

April weather in Seville, Spain
Seville is warmer in April than the other destinations on this list: a beautiful 24°C. Because it’s so far south in Spain, it’s enjoying temperatures comparable with North Africa. With eight hours of sunshine a day just two hours and forty-five minutes from London, it’s as good a spot as any for an April sunshine break. And Semana Santa, or Holy Week, takes place in the week leading up to Easter, heralding processions, floats and feasting on torrijas – bread prepared with eggs, honey and white wine. Make sure you visit El Alcazar – it’s outstanding.

April weather on the Amalfi Coast, Italy
It’s the low season along the Amalfi Coast in April, so it’s cheaper and less crowded (apart from the few days over Easter). Optimum highs sit around 21°C from the middle of the month, accompanied by eight sunny hours a day. It’s not swimming weather – the sea’s around 13°C at time of year (brr!) – but it’s the best time for visiting the area’s most famous sites. In summer, it’s just too hot to enjoy walking the incredible ‘Footpath of the Gods’, or Sentiero degli Dei, which starts in the village of Bomerano. Three hour flight away? Bring it on.

April weather in Antalya, Turkey
What the package holiday guides won’t usually tell you about is mosquitoes – yes, mosquitoes. The horrible things are rife during summer in Antalya, but in April, you’ll gladly miss them. All the better to sit and sunbathe on the so-called Turkish Riviera, lapping up 12 hours of a sunshine a day, in marvellous 21°C average highs. Of course it can get hotter, so slap on that suncream – the balmy breezes often belie how warm it is. Take the four-hour flight from London, and you could soon be taking a scenic cruise on the Med, chilled liquorice-tasting Raki in hand.

April weather in Paphos, Cyprus
Hotter, drier and sunnier, Paphos beats the UK spring hands down. When you’re not basking on Pissouri Beach (pictured left) in 21°C temperatures, you could be dipping your toes in the sea (it’s 18°C – a little nippy but possible!). With barely any rain and just four hours or so from London, Paphos is a fantastic choice for holidaymakers of all kinds. Those in search of neon lights and kitsch souvenirs (don’t hide away – we’ve all done it!) should head for Kato Paphos; others the Aphrodite Hills – after all, this is her alleged birthplace.
