HomeAway travel expert
Spain: a land of endless beaches, succulent seafood and wine so good you'll need to pack an empty suitcase just to bring back the bare essentials. Sunshine too; let's not forget the other resource that the Mediterranean has in spades. In truth, the prospect of a Spanish holiday isn't a hard sell. The difficult part is deciding which region to visit.
Barcelona, with its spectacular cathedrals, colourful houses and world-class football, or Madrid with its huge public spaces, leafy parks and world-class football? Then there's Andalusia, where rainfall is low and produce is plentiful; olive oil, oranges and the fruits of the sea. If your Spanish holiday calls for specific arrangements – such as a rental with wheelchair access – no problem: HomeAway has a plethora of suitable properties. Which still leaves one crucial question to resolve: which region do you want to visit?

Wheelchair friendly holidays in Andalusia
Andalusia boasts some of Spain's finest cities, with Seville, Granada and Cadiz all worth a look. It's also claimed to be the country's most stereotypically Spanish region, which means a preponderance of sunshine, tapas and flamenco. Throw in some bullfighting and first-rate beaches and you've got the quintessential Spanish holiday. Andalusian accommodation with wheelchair access includes this palatial apartment in Santa Cruz in the centre of Seville. As a simple, unpretentious option, this Cadiz apartment also fits the bill.

Wheelchair friendly holidays in Cantabria
One of Spain's greenest regions, the Cantabrian coast is famed for its formidable mountain landscape, estuaries and wetlands fed by gushing rivers. Cantabria's excellent cuisine includes anchovies and shellfish landed in the small ports that are dotted all along the coast. Beaches, coves, villages and estuaries extend for as far as the eye can see. One thing you're unlikely to see is a lot of tourists – most of the holidaymakers here are Spaniards exploring their own country. Take that as a good sign.
This Cabezon de la Sal apartment is typical of the accommodation you'll find in Cantabria; its clean white walls and dark-wood interior are complemented by a large terrace and wheelchair accessibility. Close by is the medieval town of Santillana del Mar and the Caves of Altamira. For its beachfront location and modern amenities, this Limpias apartment also warrants a look. A fully equipped kitchen, TV and DVD player, swimming pool and garden ensure you'll have no trouble filling your days.

Wheelchair friendly holidays in Navarra
Navarra is a beautiful region – one that's often overlooked when plotting a Spanish sojourn. The regional capital, Pamplona, is best known for its annual running of the bulls. It's an exciting spectacle to witness, but one that's best observed from a safe distance. Must-see attractions include the awe-inspiring Cuevas de Mendukilo, a series of underground caves that are rich with stalagmites (or is it stalactites? Either way – pointy things expected). When it comes to holiday accommodation, this modern chalet sleeps six and comes with an outdoor dining area and charcoal grill. Its greatest selling point, however? It has to be the pool and private garden.

Wheelchair friendly holidays in Rioja
You don't need to be passionate about wine to visit Rioja – though it certainly helps. For a small region, Rioja crams in a lot; excellent food (it was named the 2012 Gastronomic Capital of Spain) and friendly bars where pinchos – the northern Spanish version of tapas – are served with everything. Finally, there's the wine, and what wine! For a couple of euros you can acquire an excellent bottle of Rioja – spend twice that and prepare to have your taste buds wowed and your stomach warmed.
Some holiday properties deserve an entire paragraph extolling their virtues. Space is at a premium here, but take a look at Navarrete. Suffice to say it ticks most boxes, including the ones marked 'accessibility' and 'wood oven'. Brand Cottage is also a bit special – all that wood and open-plan living. Restored and full of little luxuries, the cottage is set amidst acres of mature woodland inhabited by roe deer and wild boar.

Wheelchair friendly holidays in Galicia
The first thing to know about Galicia is that it's huge. The second thing to know is that it has some truly amazing beaches. Sure, most Spanish regions can lay a similar claim, but visit Playa de la Lanzada on a sunny day and just try not to fall in love with the undulating dunes and blue water crashing gently against the shore. Or try Playa de Barra, where clothes are optional but best left in a crumpled heap if you're coveting that all-over tan. This Galician penthouse in Pontevedra is situated on the beachfront and features a balcony, high ceilings and two terraces, one with sea view. This luxury apartment in Porto Novo is a little further from the sea – 200 metres to be precise – but its swish decor and contemporary style more than atone for this. Speaking of beachfront apartments, the view from this O Vicedo holiday retreat takes some beating.
